Ok, seems a bit strange but here it goes..
I just came back from the local ford spare parts to see about a replacement sender unit for my ED ghia as is shows different fuel levels ALL the time.. The spares guy said the sender is no longer available and I shouldn't worry about it because the plastic ring cap ($75) EA-ED will not fit back on due to a problem with the nylon made fuel tanks expanding over time between 5-10mm thus the caps, new ones included not being able to fit on... He did say that a special size hose clamp($25) (size unknown exactly) were used but these also were known to fail/break... A special tool was used by ford to remove the cap also as other methods, such as a screwdriver/hammer will just break the caps... I am sure a few people have replaced there senders and I was wondering is this true? Also, what method is best for removing the cap anyway..As a note I was reccomended to see Otto Instruments for fixing the sender unit,I think they are in Rocklea... |

Sure it the threaded part can expand but 5-10mm would be s**t.
There are plenty of people that have replaced pumps/senders with No problems, me being one of them. I made a basic tool see below.

Krytox's home made tool would do the trick perfectly but i didnt have the time to make one like his. So all i did was fit 2 pairs of vice grips to both sides of the boot floor opening to the cap, then used 2 large flat head screw drivers and used the vise grips as pivot points to lever off to twist the cap undone.

Thanks guys, I thought it sounded a bit like BS..
Would it make any difference though if I put a sender unit from a 6cyl wreck into my 8cyl tank? I didn't think there were any difference in the tanks holding capacity except for perhaps Fairlane/LTD.. |

I replaced my fuel pump as it died. I followed the directions in the Gregorys and made up a special tool. Worked a treat. I don't see why a V8 sender won't work in a six and visa versa.
