Have had my EA since new (185000k - yes, not too many k's for the age)) and it now lives with me on Norfolk Island, and therein is part of the problem, as the local mechanics do not have the expertise or access to appropriate information.
Description of problem. I'd noticed in the past that when the ignition is turned on, I could hear the petrol pump for maybe 1 or 2 seconds. More recently, it does not switch off, but the car starts but runs really rough and will not idle. So revs are right up to get the vehicle on its way. Was able to get it to the mechanics but heaps of black smoke trailing me. Stalled as soon as I reached my destination. Mechanic says fuel injection problem and has checked the obvious. Diagnostic does not display any fault codes (maybe they haven't got the right equipment) Mechanic hasn't got the time ( which I would be paying for anyway) to do what I'm doing now and check the internet. He says that he needs the workshop manual to fully look into it. Any ideas would be much appreciated |

sounds like to me the MAP sensor is stuffed, but just check first that the hose has not got any cracks in it.

No, they reckon it isn't the MAP sensor. They reckon they have tried everything (obviously not everything otherwise it would be fixed) They say they cannot go any further without a workshop manual, but not prepared to pay say $100 for a one job look. Any further ideas?

i'd be checking the fuel pump relay cause it sounds like its flooding the intake manifold,

Other fuel related things to look at are, as suggested above, also the oxygen sensor on the exhaust the air temp sensor and the throttle position sensor.
Is it multipoint or centerpoint injection?

Haven't been on for a while, but unfortunately, the Falcon is still not fixed. It is a Centrepoint system by the way.
The locals mechanics have been advised by consultation with Ford mechanics on the mainland (Australia - the Falcon lives on Norfolk Island) that the problem is most likely the ECU itself, as it will not throw out a fault description of any kind. Is this likely to be a cause and if so, is a replacement readily available and what would I expect to pay - I'm presuming second hand? Cheers |

I'd try the fuel reg...
When the diaphragm in them fails they run max pressure to the injectors which cause rich running and black smoke... As to why the fuel pump does stop... I'd try replacing the relay to start with... If not the computer... The fuel pumps by law must stop once the motor stops so in the event of an accident the fuel is not pumped from the tank risking an explosion... Cheers, Tim
