Hello all. I have a really annoying problem.
My 88EA ( 5sp man, sedan ) is surging on light accel. and at cruise from 20kmh to 100kmh.
This is the 4th ECU in it ( all reco exchange units ), & other items replaced are as follows, O2 sensor (Bosch), fuel pump (genuine), fuel press. reg.,TPS, ECT sensor, MAP sensor, Distributor, coil, H.T. lead set, ISC valve, PSP switch, spark plugs, Cat convertor, Fuel vapour solenoid, reset base idle many times, and base timing too. Did pin out tests & all good.
Any ideas?

i put my twenty cent bet on it actually. you'd be amazed how dirty even straight pump fuel (even PREMIUM!) really is.

and besides, theres a chance its never been swapped out or the tank was fuel of filth and it was run dry

I forgot to mention, under hard accel, not a problem, hold it flat, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and getting way up the speedo there, no problem, just light accel, or cruise, it surges like hell, at lower speed you'd think you were gonna break a crank, it surges that bad.
Its a pain in the a**e, you drive it a bit too racey, don't want a ticket!!!
Yes, the fuel filter get changed every 12mths, use a Z168, the big one that the EFI XE's used, and BMWs use 'em too.
Its got me stuffed.

sounds exactly like the prob my car has, ive checked and changed EVERYTHING it could possibly be, but no difference. the only thing that seems to have helped is running premuim.

do you ever get a really strong sulphur type smell when you pull up at the lights?

Yes, that was when the new CAT went in, with the new O2 sensor.
Also I forgot to mention the fuel tank has been pulled out and cleaned out, new fuel pump, filter, Plastic nut & O'ring for the tank.
Its like the ECU isn't calabrated properly.
Its the 4th one now.
It has plenty of power, just idle along in first & plant it, breaks into wheel spin, LSD. but try to drive conservidly(?) it jerks/surges.

The throttle body is clean, and can't be the relay, either.
I clean the throttle body every time i change the oil, thats every 3 to 4 mths.
The alternator is good, charging like it should, no spikes, or excessive a/c current.
I'm still buggered if i know.
I have even put extra earths to eleminate poor earthing. That only helped the radio reception.

what about a bodgy thermostat or a blocked radiator? it might clog at low speed and reclog after a burst of speed.

failing that, frade to say might be time for a new car..
