OK using the above pic the pinouts looking into the plug (that is at the bottom of the fuse panel on the bottom of the RH side of the dash) are reading from left to right:

Top Row:
A-Engine STI
B-Transmission STI
C-ABS STI
D-Air Bag memory Clear
E-Engine STO
F-Transmission STO
G-ABS STO
H-Not Used
I-Not Used
J-Not Used
K-Fuel Pump.
Bottom Row:
L-Engine Ground
M-Transmission Ground
N-ABS ground
O-Not Used
P-Not Used
Q-BCM Serial data
R-Tacho
S-Not Used
T-B+ (12 Volts).

To extract the engine fault codes bridge terminals A and L and used a LED light (LED with a 560 ohm resistor) or a analogue multimeter (or digital with a bar graph facility) to bridge terminals T and E.

There are two test procedures: KOEO (Key on Engine Off - Ignition lights on) and KOER (Key on Engine Running).

The first codes will flash quickly and these fast codes are ignored. The flashes on the LED or meter will last 0.5 secs with a 2 second pause between the tens and units of the code numbers. The codes will be repeated twice, So you count the flashes or needle swings. There will be a code 10 (single flash between the hard fault codes and memory codes). Each code comprises two groups of 12 volt pulses (10s and units) separated by a 2 second pause. For example one pulse followed by a 2 second pause followed by 6 pulses would be a code 16. There will be a four second pause between each code. You need to run the KOEO and then the KOER in sequence and allow 20 seconds of Key off before trying to read the codes again. Post any codes here and we will tell you what the computer is saying is wrong. You will obviously only be able to run the KOEO diagnostics at this point.

The best connector to use to attach wires to the plugs are old fashioned (not modular) telephone plugs spade connectors (if you can't get to d**k Smiths, Altronics, Jaycar etc you should be able to salvage some complete with already crimped on wires from an old phone plug).

I'd really like to know this as well. I'm trying to do full diagnostics on a couple of ELs so any advice on diagnostic software and hardware would be EXTREMELY helpful and greatly appreciated.

Head to {DESCRIPTION} and drop muzza a PM. They have a digital display and USB so I'd assume you could connect that over to your computer.

I did look into doing something similar with the Raspberry Pi system but it was a bit of overkill effort-wise for what I needed. That's another avenue you could take if you were willing and had the knowledge.

I ended up fashioning myself a male connector to fit into the socket with the bridging and the LED already there, then a pen and paper to record the codes.

Hey. I have an 94 xg panelvan. It took a swim 5 years ago and never ran again. Dude who taught the swimming lesson says it would crank but not fire. So I bought it for $200.
Now I have it, it won’t crank so I pulled codes out with a test light.
I have come up with codes 22, 12, 2.
I can find 22 and 12. Map and tps out of range. What’s the last code, I can’t find it. Or am I reading these codes wrong??
I’ll post a video here so you can see the code
