Hey fellas, i been driving me ef fairmont with the economy button on, it uses heaps more fuel... this week ive had it off, and my economy has halved!!!
Call me stupid if you like i would a thought economy button would be to save fuel?? Spoke to a mate, he says that economy is for towing, and having it on and not towing puts extra load on the engine, hense using more fuel, Is this right??

that is quite strange...... dads EF Fairmont economy mode cuts the fuel use in half....
changes earlier, locks the torque converter in 3rd from 40 and locks in 4th at 70.. his car sits on about 12.7 Around town.

Mine sits on 15.7 in economy, and 15.3, typical sydney driving.. This time last week my range was 130k's, with just under half a tank, at the moment just under the next bar under F on the guage, and 340 ks on the range..

your mates a fool if he thinks economy off unlocks a huge amount of power from the motor.
the only thing it does is changes the signal to the ecu telling it to change gears for longer. idea being that it allows the engine to rev through the range quicker. i think it also lifts the redline a tad too. As for towing, i turn eco off. shouldn't make any difference to the gear box, but takes a lot of stress off the engine and cooling system.

in "normal" in D if your floor it, it should shift just before the limiter (5700)
i think in ECO it will change at 5500 ( 1st to 2nd ) When towing simply dont use 4th. id also run Normal mode.

i read on here once that the power button around town is better cos the engine doesn't labour as much when you are going through the gears, eg puts in less fuel to keep the revs up than have the revs lower and labouring and putting more fuel in to keep it there, if ya get what i mean

that does make sense. but the EF seems to be ok with that.. it does sound a bit like its labouring going up a steep hill locked in 4th at like 1300rpm at 70 tho.

my car uses alot less feul with eco off around town because it revs out a bit more and pulls nice under light throttle and dos'nt labour up and as for towing i dont no what it should be on but you never tow in 4th (overdrive)

true, but as soon as you go nutty on the throttle the fuel dissapears. but kinda makes sence

Hi Guys, reading your comments on the usefulness of the economy switch:
I have a Ford Fairmont EF 1994 model (straight petrol), currently the tripometer shows 13.2l/100km, and I'm not sure if that's good or not. I have tried driving with the economy switch in both on and off positions, but this appears to make no appreciable difference. What I do notice though is that it shifts to 4th gear alot faster (when reaching 60km per hour) when it is off, as opposed to only going into 4th gear at 70km per hour when the economy is switched on. Now, my logic tells me that the quicker it reaches 4th gear, the lower the revs fall, and the less petrol I'm using, but this could be flawed. I am no expert in this matter, and wondered if someone could explain 2 things: 1. The reason for the economy switch and when it should be used (i.e. not in city, only long road etc.) and 2. Any way I can get better fuel economy than I am currently getting... Cheers |

I usually drive around with eco off about 60% of the time. In heavy traffic it selects gears better, ie is more willing to drop down into a better gear. As long as you dont start to get heavy on the throttle it returns slightly better economy due to increased efficiency. if your traveling over 80 ks constantly though Id use the eco button, because you shouldnt need the efficient downshifting.
