I've just completed a little experiment with the econ/pwr switch on my auto EF GLI. Only mods done are Pacemaker Extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust system with high flow cat and muffler and a K&N air filter.
I also only run the car on Ultimate 98. With the economy mode on a full tank of fuel I got 650kms. That is a mixture of everything, flooring it, driving like miss daisy and highway and city driving. With the power mode on I got 700kms out of a full tank. Same types of driving as with the economy mode. I got more power out of it and less fuel usage. I read in the car manual that economy mode is for towing. Because of the extra load on the engine and transmission economy mode is used to change gears earlier to reduce heat (killer of transmissions). After reading that I thought I'd give the test a go. And there you have the results. I was wondering if a few more people could try it in the E series and the AUs and see if its just a fluke for me or whether its standard operating procedure for these results. Cheers Timmeh!!!! |

Been there this week actually, did the same down to nth degree...! Ok, cept that I have a EL, with a BMC... But it definately goes better, doesn't give me whiplash when changing up the auto, and gets a bit better fuel economy... Hang on, WTF does the economy switch mean again? Wolfpac

I may need to experiment with this on my car. Have been using ECON ever since I can't afford too much petrol in an attempt to lower my running costs but if it doesn't work then hey what the hell, I'll drive with a bit more oomph instead.

650Kms out of a tank, thats great, would never get that in my AU, even before it was modded.

Haha, after that little discussion also I tested it myself. There is better fuel economy to be had with 'economy' off as well as better power.

Shugg That is a full tank used. I put in over 65 litres to fill her up. Low fuel light was on for over 150ks. The last 50ks was cruising around where petrol stations are I know how low it can go before it chokes. Cheers |

heh, you don't want to make a habit of running it past half full. Apparently the fuel pump uses the fuel in the tank to lubricate itself and below half full it isn't submerged enough for adequate lubrication.

Yeah thats pretty damn good economy mate! I would be lucky to get 500kms on a full tank using pwr mode!
I only use pwr mode when im using gas thou, on petty pwr mode is fkn awesome but goes thru petty pretty quick cause it doesnt take much to redline so it revs out fkn quick as.

Would it be worth it to try this out on LPG?

Well I wouldnt want to always leave 1/2 tank in cause the crap would build up in the bottom of the tank. The fuel pump is "Built Ford Tough" |

I can positively tell you Ford fuel pumps do not like being run to dead empty - I did it once and it cost me a fuel pump. My other half had the car for a while and she ran it down low all the time and it cost me 3 fuel pumps....Once that fuel light comes on do the right thing and head for the service station. $50 of fuel is better than $180 for a pump.

The fuel pump is "Built Ford Tough" lol, says it all hey - dont run your tank to empty, if it worries you having stuff in the bottom of the fuel tank, just take it off n flush it out - common sense here ppl!
