Guys, for a background on issues I'm having with my car, refer to this post: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21252
I have had two suggestions from fairly reliable mechanic/electricians that the problem could be caused by a crook computer... just wondering if anyone has had experience with this. The electrician mentioned that they have had a few of the V8's that for unknown reasons begin running rich on one bank...they have replaced computers and all comes good...is there a way to test my own computer without specialist equipment ? I have just pulled the ECU out and noticed the label reads "6DGE" along with EEC-IV...I thought the later fords were EEC-V ? The car is a late 98' model...is this the correct computer for it or has it been changed ?

Yes a stuffed EEC could give you those symptoms but it would be a very uncommon occurance IMO, the EEC is a very reliable unit.
Have you checked your air-fuel ratios on the dyno? Unfortunatly some problems can only be solved by trial and error, starting with the most simple and working your way through. As said in the other post, my bet would be on MAF or O2's (but you have checked the O2's already), not the EEC. And the EEC code 6DGE tells you that it is a '96 computer therefore will be EECV, however some parts may still be marked EECIV because in reality they are basically the same. |

Hi FairV8,
I parted with the vehicle about 12 months ago before migrating to the US (I now drive a Nissan Titan) but while we never really confirmed what the issue was, due to low oil pressure I exchanged the engine for a rebuilt one and once pulled there was every evidence the engine had been overheated before I purchased it. The rebuilt engine ran much better and the other issues went away... considering the same intake and injectors went back on the rebuilt engine I can only assume it may have been an intake gasket leak somewhere in the valley (it never used oil or coolant). HTH, Cheers, Windza Hi Windza, Well first of all, you're a lucky guy. A bit jealous of you being in the US Nissan Titan, cool... I'll check it out! Thanks for that info, a real shame about the possibility it was overheated. I'm definitely confident that is not the cause of my Fairlane, it's just running a bit heavy on the fuel. Up to 14-16l per 100km round town. Probably comes down to that its done 226000k's but well maintained overall however. I've seemed to have worked out that the 6DGE ecu is the right one fitted to it, it just used to have LPG fitted and going over the car there are more than a few unexplained wires lingering around... the patch up job to rejoin wires to the ecu harness is shocking as well... I'm going to have to solder the wires and pop heat shrink on them, someone has used ordinary crimps etc (lazy and cheap) to get it going again... I've had the car a while and she runs well, especially after popping the new injectors in. Anyhow, cheers matey. Take care. |

Yeah... basically a detuned GTR engine (5.6l)... you worry about getting 16l/100km; I'm lucky to get 19 on the best of days! I had mine chipped and some minor work so its around 400 hp... about a 16 sec quarter so slightly fastet than the old Lane

We truly do get crap car's here in Oz. Dualis, Juke, Almera, Pulsar, Altima......... boring lol |

yer we get crap cars because we are the marketing a**hole of the world it all comes down to numbers,and we dont have numbers compared to the rest of the world,uk,usa etc etc
