I'm guessing that the smartlock stuff is the same for ED to EL?

That being the case, I should be able to get it going..

Just looking though one of my workshop manuals and i have full wiring specs on both the EA and ED system which should help somewhat.

I'll let you know how I go, but it may have to wait for a while because I need this car everyday to get to work.

66 coupe, do you have any info on hooking the BTR box to the ED ECU?

the TCM in the EA sucks, it changes down really badly and does an overall crappy job.

I have an ED ECU and a smartlock override module, and it was only 2 months ago that I installed the motor and tranny, so I know where all the wiring is.

My problem is that my manual (Max Ellery) has circuit diags for EA and EB/EBII and ED.. and they don't show a TCM in the EA...

They do however show a Electronic Control Module for all models EA-Ed, they show the ECCIV hookup from the ECM in the EBII (95LE), but not EBI (85LE), and not the late model ED (91LE) which seems the simpliest layout of all. Its very confusing.

I was under the impression I was going to be cutting into the loom to the tranny and re-running them to the ED ECU to have it take over changing duties, but it seems like it is more complicated than this.. has anyone else done it?

What is the ECM and why do all of them have it if only the EA uses it for the tranny.. does it do other things as well and do I need to get an ED one to replace mine if I want to get the ED's ECCIV to do the shifting?

any help would be much appreciated.

would it help if I scanned the diags and put them online long enough for you to check them out?

It would be easiest getting an ED / EL engine and trans harness and fitting it to your car.
Otherwise if you want to modify your harness, you need to connect the tcm wires to the ecu, and remove the tcm.

Here's the rest of the info from the original post (where the above info came from)to cover what the '+' and '*' mean:
*Can be spliced together.
+The EA/ED's run a 'power' caption ?????? as opposed the the 'Econ' in the EF/EL - if that's the case, when 'power' is illuminated, you'll actually be in Econ mode.

It came from here: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=41978 , ebfairmont3.9 and I did the testing about 6mths before then, but the info was in PM's, so you wouldn't find them on a search.

Actually, the origin isn't really important, so long it's accurate, and people can use it.

yup, true enough, just wanted to read it in context in case there were other tips.

Coupe kept saying that I'd be better off using the whole EL loom as it's easier..

wouldn't I have to pull out the whole dash to do that?

quick question....

where is the TCM?

Is it the module in the dash near the handbrake?

found my answer...

The TCM is the module near the handbrake..

Now need to make up a loom for it.

This car is my ride to work.. so I hope I don't clag this up..

can anyone verify that the ED and EL ECU's will hookup the same way? I notice it mentioned that a EB and EL ecu was used to start (was it benj's conversion?) an EL motor.. so I thought I might try to get it working on the ED ECU I have and change to an EL ghia computer later.

right now I just want to get the ED ECU in and handling the shifting duties, later on I want to add an EL BBM and ECU to get more bottom end.

I guess my question is.. if I wire up the ED ECU, will I have to undo any of that work to wire in an EL later?

HI, the pinouts for the wires you are using for the auto controls are the same.

I only had to add pinouts to add functionality for the BBM and knock sensor. You will have to do the same for the actual engine conversion, although you can run the BBM manifold locked to the short runners on the ED ECU.

Good luck

lol, Benj.. I read about your changeover with Paul Mac..

I've decided to skip the engine part.. (only put the ED motor in a couple of months ago anyway.) and just put the head/BBM and ECU from an EL in..

that way I get nearly all of the benefits (don't care about engine quietness anyway) without the hassles of an engine swap.. wanted to put in an AU head gasket anyway.

It seemed logical not to have to change anything and only add between ED and EL, but wanted to be sure.

So really, to put the ED ECU in, all I need to do, is run a loom from the TCM harness to the ECU harness and add the smartlock bypass module I have sitting here.

I think I'll buy an EL ECU plug and put all the pins into mine now so I don't have to do that again later though.

Thanks heaps dude.

The plugs for the ECU are the same.

Just go to the wreckers and pull a few pins from a wreck to use in your ECU plug.

That way it is much easier to maintain the correct pinouts.

Good Luck with it all.

oh...

I was going to find a wrecked EL and cut the whole ECU plug with as much of the wiring as I could grab..

That way I can take pins out and put them in my plug as I need them with the wire colors correct as well.

hate coming back months later and having to pull all the tape off to see what color is wired to what..

going to be fun.. is it true that EL ghia ECU's are tickford?

Yes it is. I am on the lookout for one for myself.
