Any ideas on an el that idles perfect but when booted of the line hesitates [and sometimes makes a pop sound ]to about 40 then picks up fine. Fuel pump already changed and injectors replaced. even if rolling at 20 and flatten it still hesitates like a dog. flatten it at 80 and it pulls strong. The car is also on lpg and runs fine at all speeds. Anyone with any ideas?

too many factors to conider, judging by what your saying, ild say there could be a problem with your tranny(presuming its auto). although that wouldnt explain the pop sound, could be a worn out cat, old ignition leads, crappy dif. f@*k i if its a auto, thats probly the way it is due to superlong gearing, el's arnt exactly known for their speedy take offs

if its poppin id say its definately electrical and the fact that it runs fine after about 40 would also suggest electrical as gettn off the mark or sudden throttle changes increase load and load icreases electrical pressure therefor spark will only find a shorter path when forced through an excessive load just like water through a pipe with a pin hole in it.... you lightly run water through an you wont even know its leaking but increase pressure by say holding your thumb over the outlet and watch that water piss out the pin hole.... to make along story even longer full tune up is the go...yep plugs, air + fuel filters along with an efi service but source of problem would more than likely lie within distributor ignition coil and leads....... if u do all that watch it go like its never gone before. you might say its gonna cost heaps but tune up an efi service are maintainance items an ill bet dizzy coil an leads havnt been touched in ages.... so dont be a tight a**, get your wallett out an oull be happy you did

Popping or backfiring through the airbox is generally a lean condition. Get fuel pressure AND flow rate checked.
Faulty MAF and O2 sensors will screw up the mixtures too. Mike

Sounds like your car was doing the same thing when my leads went up s**t creek.
I had previously changed the cams and took it for a test drive, during idle it was perfect, during neutral it would rev freely, chuck a bunch of people in the car and drive off it stutters and pops along the street. Turns out I had f**k leads. It was confirmed later that night when I decided to pop the hood while the engine was running. There was arcing along 3 of the leads. Now it's running like normal again Good luck with it phong =P~

Thanks for the info guys. I thought if it were coil it would run crap on lpg too. I replaced leads 12 months ago with lpg ones and new plugs too. Distributer cap and fuel filter also changed as well as oxy sens, ecu and map no difference, any other suggestions? Could it be cat?

They are lpg leads does this mean they wont work properly with fuel? They have only done about 10,000kms as have plugs. if it were leads or plugs wouldnt i have the problem on lpg also. it will run on full power no miss over 40 but starts to hesitate at about 95 slightly im now thinking along with phongus about timing and tuning maybe.

I would put money on the fact your timing is retarded, probably by 10 to 20 deg. One of only a couple of reasons that would explain your symptoms.
Get the timing gun out and check it properly. Have you moved the timing yourself lately? Or had the car serviced lately where they may have done it? |

Thanks mate will look into the timing issue, it had a lpg tune a while ago maybe it stuffed fuel up somehow?

Disconnect the Battery overnight.
Then drive the next day on fuel. It could be a totally messed up fuel table. It does happen on non tickford LPG setups. |

It is a tickford setup, gonna try advancing the timing a bit. Thanks again for everyones help.

Them systems rule. I used to service them. Dont stuff with the timing you will make it worse. The ecu worries about timing. If its to far out you can blow things up. Your dealing with LPG. a million timesmore volitile than fuel. And it explods nice. Get yourself the Service book for it. Or take it to a dealership for a download. The gas system is made by IMPCO in the US of A. It has its own fuel computer fuel controll and ignition monitoring system. All located in a metal box under the drivers seat on most models. It talks to the ford ecu via a data buss for controll of other intergrated features. Like auto mixture controll based on O2 sensor readings. http://www.impco.ws/ |
