Hello all, can anyone tell me why my EL XR6 takes about 3 seconds to come back to proper idle speed. Doesnt seem to be as bad when it is stone cold but when it warms up, i'm not game to rev it over 2k or when the clutch is pushed in, it screams for a couple of seconds. Have checked the cable and its not sticky, return spring is working properly. The butterfly in the throttle body snaps back very quickly but the engine continues to rev for a second and slowly comes back to normal revs but way too slow. Anyone had this problem?

Could be your idle speed controller is a bit sticky.
Take it off the throttle body and give it a clean or replace it. |

is it an auto? mine does the same - i've been told its due to the cam, as i've cleaned/checked/replaced everything else in the hope of fixing the same problem!

I had to replace mine even after I cleaned it. Damn things get so sticky.
Nothing is as good as getting a new one fitted. Watch out though as you'll pay more than $150 for it. |

Now have changed idle speed controller with a second hand one "supposed to be in good nik" and it is exactly the same. Any more ideas???

Is the air con always on?
My car does the same thing when the air con is on. If you depress the clutch the revs sometimes just sit at whatever you were changing at for 5 seconds. It's just the computer trying to keep the revs up to compensate for the compressor load. My throttle body and ISC have been thoroughly cleaned, but this made no difference unfortunately.

No, I suspected it might be something to do with the air conditioner at one stage and have had it off ever since.

Have you got a a/m cam in there?
I fixed this in mine cause I got a pretty lumpy cam in there. What you do is pull off your idle control valve and take an outline of the gasket. Cut out the shape of this outline out of a piece of sheet metal. (i used a bundy can) Now, instead of drilling the two ~12mm holes, drill 2 or three holes of about 3mm diameter. This will let your Idle controller stop your car from stalling, even with A/C on. However it can only alter your revs by about 500 RPM instead of about 2500RPM. So basically, your revs can climb after a shift or when the clutch is in because the valve won't let enough in through it.

It's in the programing of the ECU. the idle speed motor stays open to slow the drop in revs for ever reason ford thought they needed to do it for. you could unplug it and adjust your throttle stop to get the idle speed but you would have no idle up for A/C for power steering load. |

it's normal for a car to hold revs for a short period of time to maintain emissions,,don't panic they should all do it,,those that don't have a problem.

Yeh mate naught falcon is right, nothing to worry about! they all seem to do it. My mums auto wagon n my manual xr6 do the exact thing! Lots of commodores do it too...

They can do it, but the I6 is konwn for dropping back to idle slowly when cammed.
Use my method and you'll be fixed up within 30mins.
