Hey all

i have a massive problem goin on with my ef ghia. Today, it all of a sudden cut out as i was pullin into a mates house, coughing, spluttering, backfiring and not being able to hold idle. On top of this, the indicator and park lights are stuck on (indicators constant not flashing), the power windows are only barely working and the car will not lock itself by the keyfob (it seems as though it does not have the power to pull the locks completely, and only the front indicators flash in the locking sequence). The car came good for a couple of minutes but then seemed to have the same problems occur again, im not sure what caused it. i have tried pulling the flasher relay (indicators still stay lit), cleaning and checking the battery terminals and checking all electrical connections near the fuse box, bem and engine computer. This has got me completely puzzled. any help would be gladly appreciated.

Cheers

Hey dude it sounds like you have a general electrical problem with one of the common rails. Either ground or 12V positive. Check your ground mounts There should be one that goes from the battery to the body and engine. Somethimes there is one near the starter going from the body to engine also. I would clean off both of your battery terminals of any corrosion as it stops current flow and this is easily done with boiling water from your kettle. Also check that both terminals are well secured and all wires are in good condition.

Make sure your alternator has charged battery and it holds good voltage otherwise it could of been running down while driving hense why everything has little or no power now.

Yeah, my first step would be to get it to an mechanic and get them to check the voltage on both alternator and battery. Mine did something similar and it turned out to be the alternator. They won't charge anything for advice... usually.
