I have the cruise control in the falcon die a few weeks ago. i havent worried to chase it up as i didnt really need it.
The other night i noticed that the brake lights arnt working. today i replaced the switch with a genuine ford one and i still have no brake lights. tail lights work fine. Any ideas if these are separate incidents or have i got gremlins in the system? ideas on what i should look to trace before sending it to an auto elec? i cant think about what else it could possibly be!

the cruise buttons fail all the time.. i went thru about 3 sets with my fairmont..
as for the brake lights, assuming youve checked fuses and bulbs.. i would be checking for power at the tail light plugs and attempting to chase the harness back to the brake light switch. -mitch

Best thing you can do is learn how to use a multimeter and purchase one for about $10. A resistance check of your existing brake switch would have confirmed it was ok (I bet a new switch cost more than a $10 multimeter). With a multimeter you can check the condition of your bulbs, switch, fuses (resistance setting) and also check for +12v at your brake lights (DC Volts) with the help of an assistant or a large brick. Plenty of tutorials on the net on using the basic functions of a simple digital multimeter.
Also the technical documents section has an article on fitting cruise control and testing. I remember reading something about the brake switch playing havoc with cruise control operation. Makes sense as your cruise control needs the brake switch to deactivate. Good Luck

I take it you've checked the brake light fuse?

Your right arm79. I don't know why I said that. I've even contradicted myself. I wrote:
Quote: Have to agree with mitch. Failures are unlikely to be related. and then Quote: I remember reading something about the brake switch playing havoc with cruise control operation. Makes sense as your cruise control needs the brake switch to deactivate. Must have been half asleep when I wrote this one. I agree that they could even be twins and are definately related. I've edited the post and removed my stupid original comment.

{USERNAME} wrote: Your right arm79. I don't know why I said that. Yes I know... I usually am. I ask about the brake fuse, as the cruise control is powered from the +ve side of the brake circuit. If that's fine, the next problem would be both brake bulbs. If they are both blown, no brake lights and no cruise control. |

Read my last post again.
Let us know if the fuse blows again... It probably will. |

ah, indeed you are right. took 5 mins of driving for it to activate. must be some sort of failsafe on the cruise system. very smart actually.
As it turns out, the trailer i was towing must have done it 2 months ago as thats how long i havent had cruise. scary to think its been the same with out brake lights! Thanks guys
