apparently late model falcs are ok to run ethanol mixes .....they are supposed to have fuel lines etc that are able to handle the corrosiveness .

in NZ we have 10 % mixes does anybody know of any problems with ....say...20% mix are the fuel systems still ok with this.

from what im told 10% will up the octane 3 numbers eg 95_98 ron but it also leans out 3%.

so is there any limit to what % you can run in a street car??
(i understand what the leanin out will do)
before the corrosiveness is too much for stock fuel set ups??

mmm sorry to jack topic but in the RACQ roadahead magazine they reckon that it gets less mileage compared to regular unleaded due to lower density or something? doesn't affect me as i run premium but i know my parents use it

from what i have beign told allthoguh ethanol gets you lower km's your car runs better on it suprisingly:S the reason it aparently isnt good for your engine is because it actualy shortens the life of it because the ethanol itself is making it pump harder or something ( Family friend in that buisness told me he owns a couple of caltex's )

Burns at a different temperature doesnt it?
Either way it burnt the valves out of an EL Fairmont I know of, did roughly 10,000kms on it, and the head is fubar now.
We know it was the ethanol fual too becuase the head was taken off it just before he started using ethanol, and it was in top shape.

Lesson = ethanol is s**t.

yeah ethional isnt the best s**t o use. i put it in the telstar, it loves it, but i hate to see what its doing to the insides.

The newer cars, BA+, should be designed for it. so you shouldnt have a problem. I think it mainlky does damges on 150,000klms + cars.

I run it in my 90 Lancer and the POS loves it too, so it cant be that bad as it has 245000k's on it

My old magna got an extra 10km's per $10 of fuel with the premium (non ethanol) than with regular.

Japanese cars run better on higher octane premium fuel than the australian cars (ford and holden etc)

I know that isnt actually topic related, thought someone might learn something from that :)

the thing that gets more power is that you need a higher AF ratio to run it, so economy suffers.

the flip side is, in a indy car, instant 80+ horse becuase it has a higher calorific value. and because of the higher AF ratio, more of it is in the cylinder.

ethanol also carrys a lot of water quite easy so it rusts things very well. it also corrodes a lot of the plastics well too.

the next problem you'll face is that the ecu wont run right, and the oxy sensor will get bad carbon posioning as it will clean the valves REALLY well as well as cylinder tops.

and another prob will be it will loosen any deposits in the engine and the oil filter and clog it fairly quickly.

but this is only high mixes over 3 or 4 weeks...

OR low mixes over an extended period of time, as per my example.

ok its only gonna be a once off at the drags....it should be pretty sweet for carbon as ive had the heads off 20000k,s ago.
as for the EEC im runnin a flash tuner and i can switch to a 95 program from 98 which should compensate for the leaning out.

was just wondering why manufacturers had decided that 10% is the max figure ....seams to be more govt regulated.

if the fuel lines etc can take 10%..youd think 15_20% would be ok for a once off??

Have a look at what some guys are doing with E85 in the US. 1600hp at the wheels from a bg block with a procharger strapped to it and no intercooler. Also can get away without an intercooler in a turbo car buy mounting one injector backwards in the intake piping as all the US formula SAE teams do and they still get almost freezing inlet temps on a 40 degree summers day.

Yes it is highly corrosive, same as methanol. Think of E85 as a street legal EPA approved version of Methanol.

interesting .....i think the future in fuels will be interesting

i read somewhere that BP is experimenting with butanol which apparently has all the good points of ethanol/ methanol ....but doesnt have as many bad ones.....corrosiveness etc

found out the 95 programme in my flash tuner has about 3deg less timing than the 98 programme so 10% ethanol leans it out 3%....so might be safer to stick to 10% in the 98
