I don't want to sound like a smarty here but have you blokes gone to an Auto Elect and asked them to check your system? Maybe they have experienced this before.

trying to solve this one without the need for an auto leccy - i've got the tools/time/spares to do it all, just need to narrow the problem
seems odd its only cold starts though - is yours the same barney? car runs perfectly any other time. i'd also thought about changing starter motors, but might leave that for now. inhibitor switch - from memory this can be cleaned yes?

like i said jsut now on PES fraz, its most likely the smartlock module, this is separate from the BEM too. because banging above your left knee works it means the module is playing up but will slowly be getting worse, needs a new/replacement module, or just bypassing. cant really fix the current one.

I'd first check the main earths in the engine bay, make sure all plugs are tight. Engine to battery and battery to chassis etc. Then I'd probably look at replacing the ignition barrel. From cheapest option to more expensive.

Yes, similar takes a while first start but can be turned off and started with out a problem.
Searching the forums I believe the inhibiter switch can be cleaned, but other searches show that if you connect the red/blue and the black green wires it will bypass the switch. |

Sound exactly like what is happening to the AU i own, it is a prick of a car to start of a morning and also at lunch time, Krupted Suggested the Ignition Barrel on my car some maybe it is a similair problem happenging of your car, i borroowed the sensor off an ignition from work and will try that on the weekend. if not i will have a look at this fuse that was spoken off earlier.

i jiggled with the shifter handle today and it seemed to boot it into starting quicker, once i moved the shifter into a particular spot
perhaps indicitive of the park/neutral switch being stuffed...?

have you tested your battery?
when the engine is cold it takes ALOT more energy to start the engine turning over, so a poor battery may show an issue which you will not reproduce when it is hot. |

problem is solved every time by pushing the shifter handle forward in either P or N
