What can you guys tell me about fuel cooling??? i was told that it can save fuel as well as give u a very very small increase in some power....
what i would like to know is: 1. is that true 2. has anyone done something like this on there fords 3. cost/benefit anyinfo will be good guys. thanks, Jason |

I have one fitted to my bike....it's a 1999 Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird...so it is EFI.
I did this because the fuel in the tank would get so hot, that the insides of my legs looked like they were sunburnt. It would do this when it was on 1/4 tank or lower. I used a tranny oil cooler for this.

He's on a bike, his fuel savings would be through the roof in comparison On a serious note, I don't see it helping much in fuel eco or performance, but it sure as hell would keep the fuel tank nice and cool so that when you open it up on a 40 degree day, you don't get a hissing or vapour coming out of the fuel tank. cjh...lucky for Across riders as myself...the fuel tank is not between our legs

I’ve had a lot of intresting theories, I’m guessing a fuel cooler will be next to minimal in any fuel saving or performance. I’ve had some mate say that they have found alot more smother acceleration and longer lasting fuel in the talk. I guess I can’t hurt to try it. I have an old oil cooler from an old BMW, going to give that a wash and try it out. Worst possible outcome is that I don’t tighten the hose properly and fuel sprays everywhere and cause a fire.... best outcome is slightly better engine response. This should keep me occupied for the arvo...

How will you ensure fuel pressure does not suffer?

some of you have mention that it will keep the "fuel in the tank cool"
How is that? I understand you are cooling the fuel delivery just before it goes into the fuel rail right? Then how does this affect tank fuel temps?? Thanks MITCHY

Thanks MITCHY There's a fuel return line back into the tank from the fuel rail. It might make a small difference.

i can vouch that the tank temps in summer, even out of the sun, are amazingly hoT! im talking +50'c
i do see a fairly major issue with what your going to attempt tho. You want to put an intercooler full of fuel directly BEHIND the bumper, if you are ever in a 60kph front ender you'd be seeing a conciderable fire. there may be another issue with the ecu (*slash* fuel system in general) having super heated fuel coming in after a heat soak from the radiator and the ecu adjusting for denser fuel too at different times of the year. In F1 they pre chill the fuel, and yes, they do do this for performance (as well as storeage, as it is slightly smaller while cool)

The ECU would be adjusting for fuel temps any way during the year. When you consider that on long trips the fuel starts off cold in morning then heats up during the trip. Trying to keep it cooler in traffic could be an issue. HEAT SOAK as some one mentioned.....but their are pros and cons, fore and against. I think a few people should give it a shot and we will see what the overall average is . Im thinking of a peltier type cooling system, Prob is any small gains in fuel cooling will most likley be lost in large power consumtion to run peltler . MITCHY
