hey all,
my fuel pump is not priming every time i turn the key off and back on ..? is this normal .. randomly it will prime and then i can get the car to idle .. but its very inconsistent ..? i do not want to change the fuel pump relay yet in fear of trashing the only spare i have due to an un-diagnosed problem... also the engine will not pick up revs ..? .. im guessing this is a computer issue ..? any advice? what can i check REF- 1993 eb - ef xr6 engine - known working ef fuel pump . thanks once again |

the fuel pump should prime every time the ignition is switched on..
it will generally only be 1 of 3 things, 1. fuel pump..check the plug connection to the pump, also run direct 12v to the pump and see if the pump will run constantly. 2. fuel pump relay.... check or change the relay 3. ecu,try another ecu to test it... a known working fuel pump can still fail at anytime... |

pump with 12v+ is running fine ....
swapped the relay ( it is the green one under coolant tank?) no go found a loose earth on the ecu ..replaced .. no go ..? i only have a eb auto fairmont ecu spare.. will it work for a test on my manual gli? can i hard wire the pump with a switch? or will it confuse the ecu |

try the other ecu, if it fires up and runs fine the other ecu is cactus..
actually change the brown relay aswell, this is the ecu relay. if the ecu relay is faulty the fuel pump wont work either as the ecu triggers the fuel pump.. |

check your boot earth as well which is the basis for the fuel pump ground I think? behind the drivers side tail light from memory... Make sure it's tight and corrosion free... Stuck a multimeter in the fuel pump plug and actually measured the voltage getting to the pump?
Cheers, Tim

boot earth is good...
replaced ecu relay ... and still nothing .. this is really getting to me .. can i run a 12v+ igntion to the pump ...? with no harm ? |

you can to test but legally you can't as a permanent thing... The fuel pump must stop when the engine stops... What voltage is at the two pin plug in the boot to the pump?

you can bypass the ecu trigger and run 12v from the ignition but it must run through a relay to draw its power directly from the battery....
being controlled by the ecu is really a safety thing, if the engine stalls the ecu normally cuts fuel pump..eg, your fuel line splits the engine will stall, the ecu cuts fuel pump.. if you bypass the ecu trigger, and something happens like a fuel line splits and the engine stalls the pump will continue to pump fuel.... otherwise the car will start, run and drive fine with the fuel pump running from direct 12v.. |

it just has to get me on the road today .. i can sort it out when i have time .. probs just a bad earth or a crushed wire or something stupid... ..
it is annoying me now .... i cant seee what else would be cutting power to the pump .... |

that's why i've asked you what voltage you have at the pump? This will help determine what's wrong...

i lent my multimeter to some little s**t about 2 weeks ago .. ima call him now....
you want Dc voltage at the pumps plug with the ignition on ? or do you want amps when cranking? |

Unplug the two pun plug to the pump... Stick the mutlimeter in the two terminals set to dc volts... You'll need someone to watch it while you flick the key on because it goes for a couple of seconds once you hit the key...
If you don't see 12V then trying measuring from the positive pin the plug to the boot chassis... See if you get 12V then... Cheers, Tim
