just curious on how much people have payed for there fuel pump to be replaced, just so i know what im lookin at..

I think you can find stock replacement pumps for around $150 from places like supercheap, if you need to have it fitted I would add $50 labour (about 15-30min job).

What a coincidence! My fuel pump s**t the tin today. Was driving along then all of a sudden just died in the a*** and stopped dead. Checked for spark, smartlock, blown fuses but are all okay. Only thing not happening is a light whirring sound when the key is turned on to accessories. Im gathering that is the fuel pump priming (pressurising) the system yah?
I have put a multimeter across the fuel pump plug (under the black circular panel in the boot) and there is power getting to it so im just about sure to turf the pump and replace with a shiny new one. One question, how does one get the black ring nut (aprox. 150mm diameter)out off the top of the tank? And what should i expect to pull out of it?

Yes it is easy to fit yourself. To get that big locking ring off just use a large flat-head screwdriver, place it on one of the ribs and hit it with a rubber mallet. It sometimes takes quite a few hits but it will start to unscrew slowly, keep moving the screwdriver to the next rib so you dont end up breaking them. I have used this method to do 6 or so pump changes and never had a problem. Also note that there is sometimes a big hose clamp around the locking ring which can be difficult to get off.
Once the locking ring is off, remove the 2 fuel lines (make note of which one goes on which outlet) and pull the hanger assembly out of the tank. Unplug the wiring harness from the plug and remove the pump. Some pumps have a plastic connector between the pump and the metal pipe of the hanger, remove this and replace it with a section of EFI fuel hose and 2 hose clamps (this isn't needed but I was always told that this part can cause problems especially on performance engines). |

Thanks for the info there EDXR8. I hope theres someone in bunbury open tomorrow that has a fuel pump in stock! Do you reckon i should install a higher performance (higher flowing) fuel pump? Would it make any difference in performance power wise?

The stock pump is good for about 200rwkw so is fine for most people. You can get high performance pumps for about the same cost as the stock one (I got a 600hp capable 255l/hr Walbro pump for about $170 from memory), but they are harder to get hold of.

would there be a point in getting a higher hp one? seeing as the ecu controls the pressure anyway?
one other question, do u have to take out the fuel pump fuse or anything? |

Fuel pressure is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator, but when you are producing high hp, your injectors basically empty the fuel rails quicker than the fuel pump can keep up with so fuel pressure drops. This isn't an issue until around 200rwkw, below that there are no gains from a bigger pump.
And no you don't need to remove the fues to replace the pump, obviosuly just make sure the ignition is off. |

But it cant hurt to have a bigger pump? (For future power-ups Eg: turbocharging?) The regulator wont restrict fuel flow so much that the pump will burn out? Last question from me (thanks for the help by the way) a pump such as yours (walbro 255lph) will bolt/clip straight in without modification? And sorry to 'jack your thread exchaser!

No a large pump won't hurt at all, if you think you may be modifying the engine down the track you may as well just fit a decent pump now. The only problem is that I am not sure if there are any decent suppliers in Australia, I just got mine straight from the US which takes about a week to arrive.

Mine died in my NA a few years ago, IICR $150 supplied and fitted. Keep a hammer in your boot just in case, tap it, as this helps keep the fuel moving.

In desperation i went to Repco today and bought a new pump for $200
 ! I couldn't find ANYONE local that had it under $190, oh well, its how you say, s**t happens?
Fitted it without a hitch in about one and a half hours, the biggest b**ch is getting that big ring nut off the top of the tank. I tell you, my fingers were crossed when i went to turn the key on, just waiting for that whirring sound! |
