hey lads,
Before I start my car I always let the fuel pump do it's dutys, and latley it has been making some strange noises, normally it will humm and thats it, latley it almost sounds like its crunching, only does it sometimes, I'm guessing it's on its way out? Are EF pumps inside the tank or outside? Hard to change? Also, would this have any effect on the car not idling properly on cold start ups? once its warmed up or you drive it up the street it's fine. Also if you nail it, it will break up and miss from 3000-3500rpm then rev fine. It will rev fine if you ease on the accelerator, just when you give it a boot full it breaks up. cheers,Rob |

The fuel pump could be the problem... They are an intank pump, piss easy to change.
IIt would have an effect on idling, definately... on idle the car isn't producing as much current as it would driving, hence an efficient pump is required to be always pumping enough fuel. Once they are on their way out, they lose this characteristic. As for the revving... Its quite possible, but could be anything else.. Cheers

Before you go shelling out for a new pump, check the inlet strainer (looks like a fine mesh bag) on the current pump for crap, also make sure your fuel filter has been changed recently - if you have access to a pressure gauge, check the fuel pressure in line on the tank side of the fuel reg while the car's running.

how do i get to the fuel pump to look at the strainer? through the boot?

In the boot, under the carpet. You'll see it, under the round plastic cap.
The fuel filter is probably due for a change anyway, and is piss easy to change. Checking fuel pressure isn't hard either, just hook it up inline, and observe... it goes over the procedure in the Workshop manual. Definately worthwhile having one.. Cheers

Cheers Ill dig my manuel out and have a look. Any precautions I should take before changing the pump? I might aswell do it anyway, as the car has nearly got 250 on the clock. |

It's not all that difficult... just take it out, take care with petrol... and then, unplug and unclamp the old one, place the new one in its spot, and do everything back up (noting the way the wires went). Stick sock the screen back on it, and stick it back in.... done.

lets see...sometimes the car won't start... it starts getting loud. It drains more voltage due to an increasing short circuit, Power seems all over the place, and a rough idle... are some of the symptoms I experienced...
Did you change yours? how'd you go? Cheers

still havent done it yet, I gotta wait untill I get time off work.
Would the car break up at all? when i boot mine it coughs and f@rt like a whore on bourbon street.. lol |

the other day i had my car running for a bit switched it off and then went to start it again and it wouldnt start unless i put me foot down on the gas is that tellin me my pumps on the way out? its done it twice
