Hey guys. i got a Ford EA Fairmont Ghia and my car died in the parking lot today after it started for like 2 seconds. after a few check ups i found out that my fuel pump is stuffed. i hit the petrol tank several times and then tried starting it and it started running, and for some reason it ran better then before, more responsive. My fuel consumption is high as well about 17L/100Kms.
can the fuel pump be replaced with ford parts or can it be replaced by a different brand, a more reliable one? due to the faulty fuel pump does that effect the fuel economy? any help would be great

Any auto parts place like supercheap etc should be able to supply a replacement unit. Really doesn't matter that much about brand unless you are pushing high flow rates or pressure for heavily modified engines, they should all last 5-10years easily.
Replacing the pump is fairly easy, have to remove the acces plate in the base of the boot, remove the big black plastic retaining ring (this is the hardest part). I found the easiest way is to use a large flat screwdriver and a mallet to hit against the ribs on the outside of the ring, it will slowly come loose. Then you just have to remove the fuel pump hanger, replace the pump and put it back in. |

Never seen it for sale anywhere, most make it up. I have changed fuel pumps in falcons many times and have never had a problem using the screwdriver and mallet.

hmm i loosened up the metal ring around it but the plastic one is still a bit tight, imma yank off the tubes and block them with something before i pull it out. by the way is a new fuel pump for 190 bux at repco expensive??

Yeah it takes a bit to get it started, just keep hitting it firmly (anti-clockwise) and it will start to budge.
