G'day all, I have posted this before, and I am doing so again in the hope that someone who knows may read it.
I had cause to change the fuel pump in my EF Fairmont wagin, 'cos the original one was getting really noisy, but was still working. I replaced it with an aftermarket pump, and within a week, it was seized solid, total meltdown. Replaced that.....same thing. Got another pump, put it in, and managed to pull it out before total meltdown, but it showed signs of scorching Got really sick of shelling out for new pumps, so went to a wreckers, and got a 2nd hand one. no problems. (a little bit noisy, but) My question is: why do the aftermarket pumps self destruct, yet the standard one doesn't? (When I got the one from the wreckers, I got the whole lot: sender. float etc. and replaced it as a "unit") Anybody with any ideas?? |

all pumps in the wagons for some reason seem to be noisier than in sedans. second hand genuine is a much better way to go as it is specifically designed for that car. I got a repco one once and it eliminated in two weeks. Got a second hand one and it was fine for years.

They probrobably seem noisier being inside the car. I think I will stick to genuine 2nd hand, even if they only last for 6 months, it is cheaper in the long run. The last one I bought for $30 I think, so I can get 3 pumps+ for the price of one. Only the inconvinience.

were you using new filter socks with the pumps? the only reason they will seize solid is if crap gets into the pump

Yep, used new sox every time except when I put in the 2nd hand pump, that went in used sock and all. I didn't even change the fuel level float.
The pumps ended up looking mostly like this: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... highlight= |

Absolutely. Being a wagon, one has to almost completely drain the tank when removing the pump/sender. It;s a pain, I can tell you!! But I am absolutely positive of the quality of the fuel.

I don't think so, not according to the manual anyway. Besides, the fuel system worked fine as soon as I put the pumps in (until they burnt out!!)
They tended to burn out pretty quick, one day the worked, the next they didn't. The fuel flow didn't seem to deteriorate slowly at all, altjhough the engine got progressively harder to start first thing, that's how I saved the last pump I put in. When it started to get hard to start, I ripped it out and put the 2nd hand one in. |

Besides, the fuel system worked fine as soon as I put the pumps in (until they burnt out!!) a lot of pumps where made and assembled in china,my parts supplier told me,they had a lot of problems with them, now only sell vortex pumps and have 1 in 10 failures, still not perfect -but better.
