well what requirements are there for changing one like do you need an xr6 engine to run an xr6 ecu?
is there power potential within changing ecu?
do powerchips, for example J3 chips have anything to do with the ecu?

may seem like stupid questions but yeah i have no grasp on ecu's hahah

the xr6 ecu will make the auto shift a little quicker and give a very very small amount of power gain, and a chip goes into the bottom of the ecu and changes it to whatever the chip is programed to do

ok. well if you replace an ecu in an au for eg: a series one will need a series one ecu, and series2 or 3 will need a series 2 or 3 ecu..
you can run a std engine on a xr6 ecu and you can run a xr6 engine(non vct) on a std ecu, the performance differences are minor..

a j3 chip has its own tune and plugs into the bottom of the ecu which intercepts/overides the std ecu tune..
again in au most usually go with a flash tune instead of a j3 chip. a flash tune will over write/replace the factory tune in the ecu..
imo if the engine is stock there is no need to j3 the ecu, it will run fine on the factory ecu..
if a cam change is on your mind then a j3 or flash tune will be needed to get the gains from the cam..

if youve got it sitting there and dont plan on selling it then you may aswell stick it in but you probably wont feel much if any gain at all in a manual? also it depends if yours is series 1 and what the computer is out of, you will have to double check with someone who is more familia with the au falcon though

thanks troyman, that clears a fair bit up for me! so do you think i should put the series 1 xr6 ecu in my series 1 ute?

give it a try, it wont hurt.. you might feel a slight increase in performance but nothing major.. if your not happy with how it performs you can always put the std ecu back in...
