OK here is the situation:

I drive for 270 kms from Albury to Bunker Hill down the hume highway, I slow down to take the right hand turn to Donnybrook, as I turn, the engine stops and the steering tightens up, so I put the car in neutral and start her up again, and away we go.

That only happens then and only then, not around town in melbourne. I did notice when I was slowing down in melbourne traffic today that the tacho went all the way down and the voltmeter red light flickered.

What problems should I look for and what causes this, and how can it be fixed, because one day i may be wearing the rear of a truck as the nose of my car.

Does your car stall when you turn the wheel all the way in either direction?when you are still. Or only on the move? could be Power Steering switch playing up.

Try resetting the ECU and when you plug back in:

Idle in D for 2 mins
Idle in D for 2 mins w/ A/C on
Idle in N for 2 mins
Idle in N for 2 mins w/ A/C on

And work the steering wheel back and forth a couple of times under each scenario above.

Bascially trying to teach the ECU how to idle. It may help.

by any chance you wouldn't have happened to repair your p/steer leak lately?

there was an article in street machine a while ago on this, to do with an old car but it turned out to be a loose electrical connection, i reckon it could be this since ur volt meter light is coming on, id say a short somewhere due to a loose connection/broken conductor.

by what he's saying, i think his battery light would be coming on because the car has lost rpm, and it's too low for the alternator to charge.
if it werent the case, typical ford problem is the p/steer leak on the 6cyl falcons, and it leaks directly onto the alternator below, and even a degrease of the alternator wont get rid of all the oil inside, and it wears out the ring on the rotor REALLY quickly.

power steering switch. there is a sensor that tell the ECU that the power steering is being used so it increases the engine speed to prevent stalling. sounds like yours is dead. they usually start leaking too. not very expensive to replace.

well possibly, i really wouldn't see why the alternator would die only on certain manouvres.
I think it could be fuel related also, but you really need to start ruling things out first.
Barry_V could be onto something, as the p/steer is speed sensitive in the fairlanes, and possibly as you slow down coming off the highway, then making a right hand turn, it's creating a problem, so check your p/steer switch also.
keep us informed
