Hi all, I have a 94 ED XR8 sprint. Can anybody tell me the best direction to go in as I don't know a lot about ECU's? Firstly I cannot get the car to run smoothly at all. I have done a self diagnostic test with an LED light and could not get any pulses the light simply stayed on. I believe that would mean an earth leakage in the computer. I have also plugged in a scan tool and it would not read. I have removed the cover on the ECU and discovered there are some leaking capacitors. From here I don't know where to go? I believe the sprint had a unique computer. Can I get the old one repaired or are there after market ones that will just plug in? The car is factory stock, no modifications. Any help from some one that knows a bit about this would be very much appreciated.
Thank you! |

You have a few options. You could send your ECU away to get repaired, or you could find any EB-ED V8 EEC (unless you have an auto, in which case youd need an Auto ECU).
Get a J3 chip from TIPerformance, with the Sprint BIN Written to it. And you'll be right to go again Good opportunity to get a slight reprogram as well while your at it. TIPerformance is a forum sponsor - www.tiperformance.com.au Nigel |

Hi Nigel, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I will contact them today to see what they can do for me.
If any one out there has a V8 ECU or preferably a Sprint / GT ECU they want to sell please let me know as I gave mine to Advanced Automotive Industries in Brisbane yesterday and they said it was cactus. Regards Luke |

Thanks Nigel.
So is it ok to put an Auto ECU in a Manual car as mine is a Manual? |

When I was building my XH V8 I was told any V8 E series ECU (manual or auto) will work with a J3 chip.
You'd wanna J3 it anyway to get some extra kw's... Also.... why the hell do you have stock headers and exhaust lol Put them aside (if you want to have original as an option) throw in some coin and wake that baby up!

J3 chip will run the code that you put on it. Auto and Manual ECUs are the same (hardware) - the TCM is seperate so run manual code.
Littlefoot - You can run any E Series ECU, especially as this is a manual. As it is a manual Id look for an EL V8 ECU, run the EL Bin, and get Thermo Fan Control for free. The EEC-V is also a little faster on its fuel calcs. I have one Im about to sell soonish Nigel |

didn't the EB's still have a separate controller for the auto?

The EF and EL also have a seperate TCM
The AU was when the Trans control was integrated into the ECU Cheers Nigel |

Pretty sure a company called Injectronics will be able to help you, they offer a ECU test and repair service, but you need to go through someone like Repco

I have been talking to T I Performance and they are doing a Stage 2 j3 chip up for me with a tweaked sprint tune to plug into a 3DFA ECU that I purchased on eBay.
Here is a question for you. Did Sprints have Smartlock? By T I Performances records they "didn't" as they were a EB GT based ECU that was pre Smartlock. So the chip they are doing for me will have smart lock disabled. My Sprint does have a red Smartlock module above the hand brake, but is it possible that the smartlock engine immobiliser side to it was not activated? My worry is that if the new chip has smart lock disabled but if the sprint does have smart lock then am I going to run into problems. |

EB GT's were all series 2 based, but I'm pretty sure Smartlock was introduced in the series 1 EB's
And yes, even the Sprints got Smartlock |

Hi how did you go with the ecu? I have a sprint also an encountered an issue yesterday, auto electrician reckons I have no pulse injection even though fuel and spark is all good...
Been told it's the ecu or even the BCM. |
