Today, I went to install the trip computer I got last week. Following the instructions on this site, nothing wrong with that - or so I though.
Now, I'm stuck with no instruments (tacho/speedo/odo/trip/fuel/temp etc.) except warning lights still work (handbrake, ABS, airbag, etc.). Also the car appears to be in limp home mode. Being stuck in 3rd is no fun at all. Have to manually shift to get any decent acceleration out of it. HELP! Someone Canberra way, want to help look over it for me, I've left it as is. Now of course the mod meant adding wires that go to the BEM and Dash Instruments - I hope I haven't killed one or both of those...

Well if you want a quick fix; do you think you can return it all back to stock?
Then get someone to help do it again maybe? Sorry im not much help, just doubt many people would be able o help ya without some time - if u arent in a hurry then all be good. Also i doubt very much itd stuff the dials of the cluster and not the rest; and the BEM I dunno.

First thing to do is to Check all your fuses.
What sounds like has happened is you have blown a fuse that powers some of the cluster bits (Ignition or something). Hence the cluster isnt getting power. Without the instrument cluster working, then the EEC-V isnt getting its speed input (the cluster converts the speedo sender output to a nicer signal for the EEC-V). Without the speedo input, the EEC-V doesnt know when to shift gears for the Automatic, so its leaving it in third. Hope this helps. If the fuses are all ok, then you cluster may be cactus, but I HIGHLY doubt that, as they take a HUGE beating in terms of shorting, and powering pins that shouldnt be messed with.

cheers I'll check all the fuses first thing tomorrow.
/me crosses fingers/thumbs/toes/eyes Worse case, would it be the BEM that died or the cluster? Since all that was added to the cluster was a data line, where as the TC required extra power lines (sourced from the BEM).

why did you take the power wires from the bcm. i mean theres nothing wrong with it it, but its much easier to use the wires from the demister switch right next to it.

I did take them from teh demister switch, just that they are sourced fro the BEM somewhere along the line, so I guess if I shorted something, the BEM is in for a shock. Don't know how I would've managed that, I spliced, soldered, and taped all wires securely. (I'm more an electrician than a mechanic). Anyway off to check the fuses.

A fuse it was
$1.10 down the local servo, and everything working again, even the TC. Dunno how I managed to blow it (maybe it was just it's time).
