Hi chaps, I have put an Au VCT engine in my EF. I got a 98 octane tuned J3 chip for it & it goes like the clappers, but i'm not happy as it has much higher fuel use and it idles fairly lumpy-it just isn't spot on. With the standard ECU it idles smooth as silk, runs nice, easy on fuel and really doesn't have that much less performance, all I do is cruze anyway. Since the factory tune seems nice I was thinking just going for an EF XR6 ECU, what do you guys reckon? I'm concerned that I still have the 3.08 diff and this will mess with it brain as it's set up for 3.45 gears. or maybe I could get one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BPRacing-J3- ... 53eb4e71ab
What do you guys reckon i should do?

is the vct operational? if not then that would be the first priority as it controls the cam timing.

VCT operates, but ECU doesn't control it. It has a J-car frequency switch set to 3000rpm.

How bad is the fuel?
My VCT has always used heaps, I think its just how they are. On a run to Melbourne got down in the 8s, but in normal driving never better than 14/100 over a tank. And I live semi Rural. Has the J3 been done on a dyno? |

Mine uses abot 13.9 with the j3 and 10l with standerd ecu, with a mix of stop start & cruze. It runs really well. It hasn't been on a dyno, it was a pre-tuned post out job.

What do you guys think about running an EF Xr6 ecu? Would it be suitable with the diff gears I have? I realise it might only give a very small bit of xtra performance, but might be worth it?

AU ECU won't work in an EF.

Totally different ECU to the EF.
You can operate the the VCT but using a rev switch but is it worth all the hassle. Most people disconnect the VCT and run aftermarket cam and vernier, better results. |

As he already has the AU VCT engine in the car, if he uses the AU engine to ECU loom, makes any wiring mods that are needed between the ECU and BEM, and either disables PATS or uses an early AU Smartlock ECU rather than a later Smartshield one, it should work a treat. It just isn't as simple as "it won't work because it's different".
Whether it's worth doing or if there's an easier solution, that's a different question. As the AU engine runs with his current setup, probably the best answer is to put the time and $ into tuning it on a dyno to get the full benefit of the J3 rather than stuffing around with hardware. A good tuner will be able to give him a tune that's economical when pootling around, but kicks a*** when it's hammer time.

I've run EF XR6 ECU in my GLi (3.08 diff) - and had no dramas with the diff mismatch - in fact gear shifting in "Normal" mode is bloody marvelous for town driving - it behaves somewhere between stock ecu normal mode and economy mode - which is a better match to the engine than normal mode in the original ECU. In Economy mode tho it does tend to change up a tad quickly and can be reluctant to kick down.
Only other issue I have with the Xr6 ecu is that the torque converter doesn't seem to lock up properly at highway speed - I think it might be programmed that way tho because my eldest son has same issue with his stock AU3 XR6 - drives him nuts that he has to really pedal quite hard on hilly roads at high speed because the box isn't locked - ie. no such thing as just lettin it lug - instead the speed will fall off so extra pedal is needed to the point where it'll often kick down.
