Hi guys,

I've got a TI J3 chip in my car with on an Auto ECU and a manual gearbox.

When the car is first started, from about 30seconds to 5 minutes after start up, the idle fluctates madly.

It seems to do it both hot and cold, but more so on cold start ups.

The revs can go as high as 2000rpm, and low enough to stall the car.

The fluctuations match with a relay in the front left (under the airbox) corner of the car clicking madly.

I've also found that when the key is on but the car isn't started the fuel pump cycles as well at the same time.

The AFRs run really rich for the next 20 seconds after a big fluctuation, as low as about 11 or 12, as opposed to when it normally sits at around 14.7 or 14.8

The most odd part is that this doesn't happen everytime that I drive it, but it is most.

Has anyone else had this issue?
Does anyone know where I should be looking to try and fix this?

As a side, probably unrelated, note; my temperature gauge appears to *stick* on the way up through the range. If I turn the ignition off and then back on, it will always go back to reading properly. It's just a little thing, but it's kind of annoying.

I look forward to hearing what suggestions you all have.

Cheers,
Nic

Can you remove the chip and see if this still happens?

Sure.

I'll test when I get back home next week.

If it only does it with the chip installed, make sure the port is clean.

If it does it regardless, sounds to me like a faulty ECU power relay. They are a common failure on these cars now.

Okay, thanks for that Jason.

Will let you know how I go.

Nic

Hi Peter,

No, I haven't managed to find the problem yet.

I have only been home about 10 days since January this year, work is going crazy!

To add insult to injury, I did sit down to test it one day and I couldn't get it to fault that day.

It's going to be at least another 5 or 6 weeks until I am home again and get time to work on it unfortunately, sorry.

Okay, *finally* managed to get in and do some testing on this issue and seem to have pinpointed the problem to one of two areas; either connection (more likely) between the chip and ECU, or the chip is faulty (less likely).

Tested as described:
Auto ECU with J3 chip: As described in OP
Manual ECU with J3 chip: Thermo fans on, Econ light on. Idle hunting between 400 and 700. No response when throttle touched
Manual ECU: Started, idled and revved perfectly. Coolant gauge now works. (tested 4 - 5 times)
Reclean manual ECU port and chip with wax and grease remover on a cotton bud and tried that again: same result as previously.

To be honest, I cleaned the port bloody thoroughly, so at first I was sus on the chip itself, but looking at the J3 port in the ECU, it's not in the best condition on either ECU, even if its clean.

Running with stock ECU is fine so long as I don't try and get it onto boost too hard (which makes sense really).

Can't believe it's taken me almost 5 months to get around to getting this tested.

Thanks for the help Jason.

Nic

Hey Nicco,

The installation instructions do not say anything about using wax and grease remover! I can't stress this enough: please follow the instructions at http://www.tiperformance.com.au/Technic ... 20Chip.pdf to the letter. The most important part is done with the screwdriver and sandpaper.

Happy for you to send both the ECU and chip down if you require me to clean it. Shoot me a PM if so.

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I should probably explain better what I had done.

Auto ECU (original one) I opened and sanded down the terminals and cleaned up before installation.
The manual one I scraped down (but I forgot to sand) the terminals and scrubbed clean, tested first time.
Second time I gave it another really good scrub clean

Dumb question would using a wax and grease remover (which I have) as opposed to metho (which I dont have) lead to any detrimental side effects?

No idea. I only describe what I know works. As long as it didn't react with the PCB (like a solvent would) it should be OK, but as I said that's not the important part. It's the clear lacquer that gets everyone.

If you like, PM/email me some clear, high-res photos of the ports with the ECU disassembled.

Cheers,
Jason

Okay, disappointed with myself here. Ripped apart both ECUs and saw some of the clear lacquer still on one or two of the contacts on each ECU.

Gave both of them another really good clean and now the issue has gone away. (faulted once on auto ECU first startup but never after that, no faults manual ECU)

I've got photos, but I figure they arent really critical any more.

The revs still hang a bit, they sit around 1200rpm. Fairly sure that's now just tweaking the tune, yes?

Thanks again for your help Jason. Kicking myself over that one, I was positive I had cleaned it thoroughly initially.

Yep, you can sort out the rev hang seperately.

Glad the thread ends well, hopefully people read this before starting a new one. Sometimes the instructions must be followed!

Cheers,
Jason
