hi

i had a bit of time up my sleeve today so i got a jaycar air fuel ratio led gauge kit..
after i assembled and installed it it works but im curious about what it reads...
at idle it fluctuates from normal to lean and then it goes off ...
here is a video link...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emtn2dwPQoQ

can anyone tell me wtf its doing or is there a possibility that my hego sensor is a bit crook...
because when i put a timing light on the engine the light goes up and down like the afr gauge does at idle...

yeah, sorry to say but putting an AFR gauge on a narrowband is pretty much a waste of time :(

So thats normal??

ok what about a wide band hego sensor would that work better or is it just a waste of time???

ill change over to a wide band if it will help in economy and performance and if the air fuel gauge will work better i win all round....
what do you think?????

It wont help you with economy or performance unless you use it to retune the ECU.

If you get a wideband you wouldn't bother with the kit you just put in. Only costs a few $ more to get a wideband with screen. This is the last kit I put together:

I have also used external screens mounted on the dash

narrowband AFR gauges are not a **complete** waste of time and money, you can sort of see what your cars feulling behavior is eg, is it in closed loop mode lean cruising mode or full rich but other than that not a whole lot of use

Yeah, the jaycar kits are cheap and fun but they really dont tell you anything useful. Not the kits fault, narrowbands are just not sensors that work well with any sort of guage.

The kits I build are from techedge. They are about $225 for kits or $500 ready made. The kits are significantly larger and more complex than what you find at Jaycar though.

Techedge make the kits, ive just put a couple together.

Not the easiest of kits to put together (some parts are very difficult as far as kits go). You would want to be very confident with a soldering iron before taking one on.

to give you a rough idea, this is the main board 85% done.
