does a LPG conversion make you lose power from your engine? or does it stay the same?

Completely depends on the system that you have fitted in the car. Some systems will loose power while others stay the same (taxis LPG systems etc) and other systems (Gas reserch) increases engine power. :)

The LPG system in my XR looses roughly 9-12rwkw from LPG to Petrol. Not much really, but its the torque that feels like its weakend from switching to LPG, cant work that out myself but its definately noticeable.

Well theirs the dyno read out in my gallery so that roughly shows you the difference with my gas system, Lowest figure thier is from LPG and highest being petrol.

Approximately 10% power loss on LPG compared to Petrol.

The trade-off is cheaper fuel price.
For my line of work ... it's well worth the trade-off.

Just do more mods to compensate.

Yeah for sure, definately worth it. And yer more mods will help alot, the new exhaust system on my XR really made the LPG run alot better too so i was happy with that, its not sluggish any more but it still doesnt have the torque! :(

LPG has a less energy per litre, so it takes more LPG to create the same amount of power compared to Petrol. The end result is a power loss, unless you upgrade your engines ability to intake a larger air/fuel charge to compensate for the lower energy.

Yeah well i sortta knew i would have to do something like that, lol id rather leave it thou, otherwise the economy on LPG will get worse if i get it running too rich.

another cause for power losses is f**k up mixers..... even when running on petrol, any mixer will present a new obstruction in the intake, thereby reducing power

Yep! XR9 Ute has some nice mixers available, with 65 or 70mm inside diameters ;)

It sure will. The ID of your TB is about 65-68mm, the ID of your mixer is probably 50-55mm!

Tell me more! My mixer's ID is around 45/50, Although I was under the impression the mixer needed to be a small dia in order to create suction and draw the gas through, and that it needed to be perfectly matched to the converter.

hi

just consider this LPgas has a higher octane rating than bowser petrol :wink:

a/f ratio for normal cruise for petrol is 14.7;1
a/f ratio for LPgas normal cruise is 15.4:1

at wide open throttle there respective mixtures are very close for max power

so let me pose this if you made your engine to run on LPgas only
( design characteristics to suit LPgas just one example increase compression ratio of the engine , cause we can because LPgas(higher octane rating) likes higher coppression and less total ignition timing ) then hence in the real world LPgas will make more power than boswer petrols and it does.

PS; more compression equals greater cylinder pressures more push on piston more power out the back wheels

LPG has a higher octane rating than petrol, this is true.

However LPG also burns slower, making it much harder to use at High RPM.

Believe it or not, the GasResearch System shouldnt really develop any more power than any other system if all other things are sized right. Seriously. The bigest power loss in a falcon comes down to the fact that instead of just having air in the Inlet Manifold Runners, you have LPG as well taking appx. 20% of the volume.

I run LPG Injection, as do one or two others here.

From the moment I converted Id swear this is like no other LPG System out there.

I have More Torque More Power, no trouble getting to redline and much better Fuel economy than other LPG Systems.

A lot of that comes down to the fact that I have more usable volume for air in the manifold than other LPG Conversions.

Consistency is another issue. Now, im not a user of LPG but associates of mine who have tinkered with turbo LPG setups claim it is difficult to get a good tune as the octane of LPG changes with the ratio of propane/butane (which has no mandated mix and varies servo to servo/day to day).

So you either have a tune that's safe for all types of LPG, have an agressive tune for some LPG which puts your engine at risk in the event of lower octane

If you could find a servo that pumped consistent mixes of LPG day in/day out - you'd be lauging.

This isnt as much of an issue with Injected LPG - the Computer spends a bit of time correcting.

The biggest thing I noticed is that Temps > 25 degrees slow me down. Of course Cold Air induction would make a difference.
