Well im pretty sure after market ecu's need to 'co exist' with EEC so functions like smartlock and the dashboard work.

Therefore i dont see why the autronic could not be installed in this manner, and EEC would still be able to control the gearbox (i assume this is the problem they are talking about).

I would think the autronic will not be able to run smartlock, the dashboard or the gearbox. But simply have the autronic wired into the fuel and ignition system and should be OK.

Automatic ECUs can be tricked to run an engine with a manual box if need be in the short term.

neo_nick has done the conversion of his NL fairmont (fairlane?) hasn't he? if so, might be worth dropping him a PM or something to see what issues (if any) that he had...

Fairlane fraser!
the chicks like it long!

lol
see the problem you face is that the auto is controlled by the factory ecu (damn ford) so it recieves signals from teh auto to control it and confirm status
there is a way around it of course and its not too difficult
you have to wire up your reverse switch and put a resistor on the trans temp line and thats about it

I've just done a manual conversion on Bozz's EL fairmont, Still using the auto ECU ..

Put a few resitors on the ECU, and just had to drop the idle speed down a bit ..

Apart from that, Its like it never had an auto in it at all ..

If you want the resistor ohms, and where they where, Let me know :)

Do the thermos run all the time or are they now operating normally as they should with the resistors added?

Yup ... After you put the resistors in the thermo's stop running ..

Ok I did this mod today and the car is running perfect. Without the resistors in place the idle is higher than normal and acts silly also. Ive asked to if I can put up a doco on it as I took some photos of what I did which will make things a lot easier
