It should be fine to last that long if it's only leaking out.
Its when they leak past the firing rings that it gets in the oil and hydra-locks cylinders and all sorts of fun s**t.

i did mine on my own. it took me a bit longer than 4 hrs. but it is still going 8000km later. i'm in Redcliffe, if you need a hand give me a pm. i'm sure other guys in perth would be more than happy to help out. :wink:

Go on Kit, do it. Don't be a soft C**k. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It's really only a 4ish hour job.

But you will need a torque wrench capable to 30 to 40Nm, no question on that one.

I'm now around 95% sure I'll be doing it myself.

Today I've printed out over 35 color printouts from the doco's on here. 17 of which came from the Ugly Bob doco.

i did my head gasket not too long ago, first time attempting something like this.

make sure you get your Head checked properly.
at a minimum get it Pressure tested, Hardness Tested and Skimmed to make sure it is Flat, as most likely the reason it is leaking is there is corrosion around the water jackets which lead to the outside of the head.

there is a guy in Geelong Trick_XD on fordforums who will reco a head for about 200ish

Yeah I'll be dropping the head off to a head reco place and doing it properly.

I wouldn't mind exchanging the head and rockergear for an XR6 head, gear and cam. Probably too $$$ though.

i've got the same thing locally, if you want it. i had to buy two, due to bad planning and now it is just sitting in the shed. :(

Kit,
Make sure that you've got a long pipe as an extension for your breaker bar when you remove the head bolts. If you can get hold of one, use a rattle gun socket or a vey good brand of ordinary socket. The cheap stuff won't handle the pressure. Don't worry if you break a head bolt, the pros will get it out in the shop. Stripped my old engine yesterday and only broke one, thought it was a good result. Also remember to lift the rocker gear off in one piece by holding it front and rear.
Follow all the good advice the others have given, especially cable ties on the cam gear, and it's simple. A lot of grunting though. The torque specs and assembly order are really important but it sounds like you've got that covered with in your downloads.
I think you're better of doing it very soon because it could go at any time and it's a hell of a mess to clean out of your engine.

When taking off the headbolts make sure u use an impact socket so u dont f**k the head bolts. send me a pm closer to the date when u do it and i might be able to give you a hand.

i just redone my headgasket last week. i had to replace the head, head gasket, and the timing cover had to come off to replace the timing chain dampers. ive replaced my head twice and also fixed my dads car when the gasket blew on his car, so i know what im doin lol

Thanks for the offer and all the tips guys. I've given my brother in-law the heads up (pardon the pun), that when I have to do it, that I'll need him to run me down to the head reco place, and to help me with the bonnet and taking the head off.

But I'll tell you what guys. I'm going to do it. I think I can manage it.
I'm not prepared to pay someone $1500 to $2000 to do a gasket on an 11 nearly 12-year-old car. So I'm doing it 8-)

Just a thought,
I didn't take the bonnet off, just undid the strut lower bolts and used a length of rope tied from the bonnet to the towbar, over the roof. Not good in a gale though.
