hey all

just checking - i'll be getting my tickford engine from my Ghia wreck rebuilt - new cam/headwork/unichip etc - aiming to hit ~160-165rwkw.

i'll have the tickford fuel reg (300kPa) - and getting the stock injectors serviced before it all goes back together - but should i be looking to upgrade at all, or will the stocko ones be sufficient for the power level i'll be chasing?

cheers! :)

With a 300kpa reg they might hold out. If not get some Bosch 775's from a Magna/HSV.

The stock injectors arent rated for much power at all, but ppl seem to make them stretch a long way.

i'd prefer to do it once & do it right - the stocks are 19's yes? perhaps a jump to 24's may be worth while?

That's a fair bit of poke. IMO you'll be pushing the duty cycle above what is "prudent".

Maybe an adjustable reg with the unichip....

Having said this, i get 170rwkw with 19# but ive got 8 of them and fuel pressure is about 84psi at full boost (compared to 40 odd psi stock reg). And i'd say my duty cycle is approaching 100% @ redline...

ok mart - so a set of 24's & an adj FPR - please explain the theory behind so i know the reasons for chosing as such, as i'm not 110% clear on all this :?

No dramas. A bit of theory first up.

19#, 24#, 26# etc is the amount an injector will flow at a given fuel pressure, which, if memory serves me correctly is 38psi (or therabouts).

Therefore - if you take a 19lb injector - it will flow 19lb/hr @ 38psi. If you increase the fuel pressure, you will increase the lb it flows.

Have a play around with this calculator to get the jist of it:

http://www.csgnetwork.com/fiflowcalc.html

So, theoretically, you could continue to increase the fuel pressure infinitely to get the flow you desire (lol, pretty much the cheap a** approach i've taken)... but there are problems. 1) The injectors are designed for a certain fuel pressure and have some tolerance but after a point the pressure will change the spray pattern and the injector will have a hard time closing "against" the fuel pressure. 2) Increased fuel pressure puts additional strain on the fuel pump. 3) Strange effects when using stock ECU but not an issue if you're getting a unichip.

Therefore the ideal approach would be to mainatin fuel pressure (i.e. standard regulator) and increase the size of the injector.

EDIT: You can see on that calculator that i turn the 19# injectors into 28# injectors with the boost-referenced pressure regulator. As you can imagine, the injectors and fuel pump probably dont appreciate this!! lol

It can be done, but its not safe. You really dont want to be running your injectors more than 80% at peak on a NA enigne, less on boosted engine. My EF is maxing out my 19lb (with the stock, non-xr, fuel reg) and im nowhere near 160 yet. Find an online injector size calculator and put your power figures in and check out what are reccomended. Youll be very surprised.

hmmm - so i'd def be best to upgrade the reg & injectors then by the sounds of it.

will the 300kPa reg be fine, or should i look for an adj one? just go to the 24's or take the next step up? :?

You can always try the stock with 300kpa and see how it goes. Its an easy change to upgrade if your running out.

If you do run low on fuel you can either bump up the pressure or get some 24's in there. Either way will cost about the same.

Yer, agreed... just remember tho if you have it tuned or are in the process of getting it tuned with the 19s and it turns out they are no good, you'll need a re tune with the Adj FPR or 24s...
