hi all

im in need of a new fuel pump for my elxr8 and was planing to just throw a new walbro 255lph pump (GSS342) in but after doing a bit of searching i found a bit of conflicting info.

everyone seems to be using the GSS342 and claim its a straight fit but i found this post from MRLANDAU yesterday and just wondering what peoples thaughts are on this.

quote from MRLANDAU

There are a few different Walbro Mustang 255lph fuel pumps and some are not designed to run with our system. THe GSS342 (which is the cheapest) is designed to run with returnless fuel systems which means it is designed to pump up to the pressure and then only pumps on demand - our system being a return system pumps constantly and tends to destroy pumps not designed for it. The GSS 340 is the correct pump

A quote from my American supplier

"Yes, the 342 is a high pressure pump but it is not the correct one for a '79-98 Mustang. People use those in '99+ Mustang but they are not the correct pumps for those years because they do not last long under variable voltage. The 340 model would be the correct unit for '79-98 applications. It uses the standard large filter while the 342 uses a smaller filter to fit inside a plastic canister."
Shane

can anyone confirm this?

thanks heaps.

This is interesting my 342 just shat it's self last week, it's goin back on a warranty claim through repco, it's done about 6,000km's, it's just 4 months old. The pump seam's to be jamed?????. it cost me $220 from Repco. It's fitted in an AUXR6 sedan, and i've turbo'd it. The pump it self was smaller than stock one so u have to custom fit it.

Chris.

From memory the connections were slighly different, but that was it. Sock went on, and even sat in the cage nicely

I just replaced my 342 today as when I pulled the old one out, there was no sock. I think when it was installed they mistakenly ground of the knob in the middle that the sock is held on by. It fits in there well. As Brett said, you'll need to change the plug which is just a matter of soldering 2 wires.

If had issues with my gss 341 fuel pump ran good for one month and then slowly stopped pumping.
It didnt actually die but it start the motor pinging which cost me my motor, so be careful also the 342 is the high pressure one.

yeah have a walbro gss041 intank in my ef the foam sleave fit around the pump but the conections are dif have to conect a plug to it also when instaling the pump the filter is in the same position as the stock one but it hits on the bottom of the tank causing it to bend or fall of can u remove the square plastic tub in the tank and turn the pump so the filter is siting sidways in the tank avoiding hitting the bottom......also after fitting it started the car it idles ok but blows black smoke and carbons up the spark plugs ..and by using a fuel air ratio metre it slowly builds up to half way from lean to rich then soon as u hit the throtle it drops hard and nearly stall the motor and showing lean on the guage..im thinking that the pump is s**t or the wires are connected wrong will this pump operate if it wired up wrong ie positive on negetive and so on

I'm still running the same pump as when I posted here a couple of years ago. No problems yet. My combo made 275rwhp and pulled 13.1@105 NA and 12.3@116 with a 100 shot of nitrous and it's held up strong. Pity the head gasket didn't...
