Today as I was getting ready to head home, but when I put my gear in the back of my car I could smell something, fuel maybe and once I got into the car still this faint smell. When I picked up my mate as I was giving him a lift home he asked about the strange smell.
We check under the car for a leak, in the boot (where the smell is rather strong), and finely check the engine bay where there is no smell. Could find no leaks and no source for the smell I thought the fuel cap may have come lose but still as tight as could be when I checked it. It just went through it’s 90’000 KM service and was given the all clear. Any Ideas what it may be or what I should look for??? |

Take off the cover to the fuel pump in the boot and check for leaks/smell.
Could be loose or split hose at the top of the fuel pump. |

Was it a petrol smell, a sweet coolant smell, an oil smell, a burning rubber smell ? You don't seem too sure in your post.
Put on you best bassett nose and slowly walk around the car sniffing. You may get a better idea of what the smell is like and post more info here. As 'Timmeh' suggested also take off the cover to the fuel pump and sniff around there. Oh, and don't forget to check along the length of your exhaust, if you drive slowly over a plastic bag, sometimes they stick and then melt, but thatsmore of a oil/rubber smell Cheers. |

Have you had a look at the fuel pump? Taken the cover off and checked for leaks?

Lift the carpet in the boot up and you will see a round plate with a few screws in it on the left side of the boot floor, undo the screw take the plate off and bam you found the fuel pump.
