Hello, I have a 98 el xr6 manual.. Haven't had the car all that long and the previous owner has had some work done to it. When i picked it up from the mechanics after getting the roadworthy he said this car defiantly has some grunt and would need a piggyback computer to be able to run to its full potential..

Here are the mods that have been done to the car that we know of:

- Cam is 1 up from standard
- Fitted with forged flat top pistons
- Block has been rebored
- Crank has been rebalanced
- Block has been decked
- Valves are larger
- extractors & full 3'' exhaust

I have been looking at getting a piggyback computer or getting the ECU remapped but am not sure in which way to go. I have heard about the j3 chips but im not to keen on them as i see them as a cheaper way out..

Can someone please help me?

Thanks! Luke

you only really have 2 options which all depend on how much money you want to spend.

the cheap and still effective way is a j3 chip with a custom dyno tune.
the other option is an aftermarket ecu, this can be piggybacked onto your ecu.
again it will need a custom dyno tune but its the more costly way..

im more than happy with my ems ecu thats running piggyback on my car, i chose the aftermarket ecu because imo was best for my aplication..
in your case you will get the required results from a j3 chip at 1/4 of the cost..

Awesome looking XR6. Always had a soft spot for the EF/EL XRs - IMO they are some of the better looking Falcons.

Agree with Troyman: for a naturally aspirated engine with your mods, you would gain very little by spending the extra money over a J3 chip. The J3 has more than enough data points in the tables to be able to fine tune the performance to the max. It's all in the tuning. Some members of this forum have seen excellent gains, even self-tuned (also check out the owners gallery at www.tiperformance.com.au). And there are a number of places around that can dyno-tune the J3, if you want to get most of the benefit quickly.

theres nothing wrong with the j3 even for some turbo applications, altho an aftermarket computer can do the job better it just depends how much power you want, the j3 does have its limits with the use of turbo or supercharger, naturally aspirated will be fine with the chip

Im using a J3 chip an making a fair bit of power, you just need someone that knows how to tune them properly
