well the gears seem to change before or on 2000rpm if im light footed. heavy footed it changes at around 3000-3500. if its off economy......at the lights im in first gear up to 5000rpm if im heavy footed. light footed it would change at 3000-3500. gears stay in a bit longer on mine when economy is off and tbh i haven't seen any difference in fuel consumption since mine is in shat anyway.

at 100,000km's the cat converter and oxy sensor are usually past there expiry date. hows the condition of your leads and plugs? map sensor working alrigt? as if these are off they can just pour fuel into the engine. over all yours is that bad. i don't get much more driving moms EBII Fairmont around town.

If this was happening then the ECU wouldn't put as much fuel into the engine as normal. As the amount of fuel going in is dependent on the amount of air and the air is measured after the filter. |

is the car running at normal temperature? if it's running too cold may be putting more fuel in, kind of like a choke.
tyre pressure can effect economy too. |

If thermostat is working correctly, temp guage needle should be pointing close to top of the A in NORMAL at operating temperature. Any colder than that and ECU stays in cold start mode -- (way rich)

i woulda thought anywhere in the normal range would be acceptable.
i got a 77 deg thermostat, temp usually hovers around the L, sometimes up on the A. dash tells me its between 82-88 degs, im happy.

Leave the car in power mode on the auto, your auto will last longer.

then how come when i am on the highway with cruise at 110 and my economy is 8l/100km. The temp gauge sits just below L. BPT performance sells 82 degree thermostats, they have done tests and that temp still allows the ECU to run in lean mode etc... |

Can someoner verify this for me because right now hard driving lets it sit like half on the NORMAL line. When i go to work in the morning it doesnt even make it into the normal bracket but its cold in the hills like 1 maybe 2 deg and its 3am. The only time i ever made it go above the L in NORMAL was when i was killing th car up a hill with corners then it got to M. So will a 82Deg thermostat be better for me? Will this effect the life of the motor seeing as its done 280,000kms

well i chose it over the 92 degree one because it will help prevent head gasket failure at the back of the head and gives ya little bit better performance.
Ford only used 92 degree thermostats to get the combustion chamber hot enough to burn nitrogen dioxide to meet emissions. Mose EFi cars from other makes and models generally run around 80 degree thermostat. |

I have researched and worked on this issue exhaustivly for the last 2 months.
I paid mechanics and EFI "experts" to diagnose the problem. These are the things that ARE NOT the problem on my EF XR. Plugs Leads Airfilter o2 sensor MAP sensor IAT sensor IAC valve TP sensor Timing Vaccuum leaks ... I get 15-16/100km city driving and no better highway driving. I have only fuel related things left to check, failing that I might have to swap in another ecu! Haven't checked - fuel pressure, fuel flow, injectors. Thats about it! Any help would be appreciated!!! |
