hi all, sorry if this topic has been covered before, but...
i have a 97 el fairmont, 4.0 litre i6, standard from top to bottom. she has clocked just over 100,00kms. we've been filling her up on shell 98 premium for a long time, but it was only recently (what with fuel prices becoming a real concern) that i've noticed that we aren't getting even 400kms to a full tank - the 'less than 80kms of fuel left' alert starts going off around 300-330kms, and by 380kms on the tank it would be just about totally empty. now this doesnt sound right at all to me, considering how liberally this car is driven ... i would think on any sort of fuel, not just premium, that at least 400kms or more to a full tank would be a reasonable amount to expect? my only guess is that shes running rich for some reason, only thing i can think of is that the ecu is causing this sometimes on idle (esp. after a cold start though) you can also smell a bit of petrol fumes... how would i go about fixing this problem? my guess is that a reflash of the standard ecu could fix it... does anyone else have any ideas? and if a reflash is what is needed, where would be the place to go for this? thanks |

e series ecu's cant be reflashed, need a piggy back chip.
if ya find the problem, let me know. im usually gettn around 350km before fuel alarm goes off. giving me about 430km from a full tank that gives me an average of 15.8 :\ little higher than id like. thats usually with about 100km freeway driving, rest city traffic

i guess try the standard, o2 sensor + injectors, give it a general service and reset the ecu and see how you go?
unfortunately there are some dog engines out there that love fuel, but from a non tickford you would expect better economy than that. |

hey TheCrystalMethod....first id like to say welcome to fordmods. As YTMONT said....get ur Oxygen sensor replaced and maybe check your injectors. there could also be blockage in the exhaust (doubtful) but check it anyway. Air filter element might also be dirty and not allowing enough air into the engine. But id suggest u check the O2 sensor and injectors first. then the more expensive things. Im having the same problem as u and so far i can only blame the O2 sensor or injectors.

Just unplug the negative battery terminal and go for a walk for 10 minutes.

Hey. I have been having the same problem with my EF I6. I drive in the hills a fair bit for work. A 40km trip will toll the petrol tank of 60+km. I can get it down to 12.5km/100km but that nanna driving in the city.
The oxygen sensor is the one on the exhaust manifold right?

If i was you,i would give it or get it a full service.Replace fuel filter,engine/oil filter and oil,air cleaner, spark plugs, cooling system flush and replace the thermostat.Check tyre pressures/adjust wheel bearings.Check the timing.See how you go from there.I would also suggest checking your exhaust system/for blocks or a melted cat.
