Well it's probably been done already... but just wondering if any EEC-knowledgables can forsee a problem with this idea.
The problem we are faced with is that EF/EL EEC-V is not compatible with Tweecer (or OBD-II flash units), yet some EB-ED ECUs are. We also know that in may instances, an EF I6 or EF/EL V8 EEC-V cannot be changed to an EB-ED EEC-IV because of the difference in the connector looms. So what about a dual system? i.e. keep existing EEC-V in there. But add an EB-ED EEC-IV to control the engine fueling and spark requirements via an 'XR9ute-style' Y-harness. That way the EF/EL dash/smartlock/etc is happy, as EEC-V is still there... but can then tune the engine via a Tweecer on the EEC-IV. Has this already been done... i.e. am I retarded? Is there something i'm not seeing? A few hundred bucks for an EEC-IV and whatever a Tweecer costs... seems like a fairly good deal and could be installed by anyone slightly familiar with the EEC system. Discuss

Yep, that'll work fine Martin.
Its exactly what Pete has done in that 4L EB.. using a V8 EEC-IV! Just get an A9L or similar to run your fuel and spark, and let ur existing ECU do the rest.

Yeah just get a programable ECU... Doesnt the tweecer end up costing over a grand?

EMS is a decent unit, but you loose sequential injection (performance and economy), closed/open loop systems which make it technically illegal to run on the road, and the adaptive fuel control. The EECIV/V is actually a more advanced system with more tuning capabilities but obviously not all are compatible with the Tweecer or SCT edits.
As said, yes you can run twin EECs, one for engine management with the Tweecer and one for the other stuff. The other option is to wait until your EEC or other EECVs are supported, as far as I know Pete is working on EL XR8 support, once it is done you could just change to an EL XR8 EEC. |

This debate has been going for some time, you may see aftermarket ECUs for a little more, but this does not include wiring and some special accessories etc, something not for the faint hearted. As for price we would need Pete (XR9UTE) to post it in here, he is the Australian distributer and prices would change with exchange rates etc. The Tweecer is basically plug and play, and removing Tweecer just puts the ECU back to standard, plus the fact you have a 5 position switch that allows you to switch 4 different independent engine calibrations while the engine is still running, the 5th switches it back to standard, if you had a AOD-E etc wired up the the ECU you can even include different shift points etc. Plus the fact you loose no factory ECU control etc, you only gain more control. http://www.tweecer.com/tellmore.htm Only problem for Tweecer in Australia is as mentioned, lack of compatible Australian factory ECUs, this is slowly being overcome but in the mean time a US ECU can sometimes be used and be fully compatible with what is needed for Australian Fords etc.

Thanks for the comments guys. Well this is not something I was looking at implementing in the near future so it may be worth playing the waiting game. I'll hazard a guess and say the EF/EL V8 ECU probably a bit easier to crack than the I6, which i understand has fewer similarities to the A9L family. No closed loop on aftermarkets? EEEK!

There is a few with "true" closed loop, Motec, Autotronic etc but swapping your first unborn child for most people is to much.

Motec's not really all that more expensive than say wolf, microtec, ems ect... sure they start at $2200 plus plus plus... but they are dam good, serious kit. I have quite a few friends using Motec and they are worth the extra grand or so...

Yeah some of the motec systems are nice, but the base models are pretty poor in features IMO. At a minimum you need to add the advanced tuning option which is around $600 on top of the ECU.
