Shugg,
Which shell did you get it from. I am willing to travel to the shire to get a tank if it is good as you say. I will be keen to give it a run, and could use the extra octane as a safety barrier for the current setup Brett

Now you need to sign a Stat Dec saying the AVGAS you purchase will not be used on the road! Gotta say ... nothing beats the smell of burnt AVGAS though .... You can do what some of my friends did one night. They drained a C172. I don't know what they hold full because I've never flown one, but my mates got 20L in each of their cars and there was 3 of them |

Mind you, its probably because I run a high comp engine. I got it from the Shell on the corner of the Boulevard and Princes Hway, between Miranda and Sutherland. Richard |

nope they use shell optimax straight from the pump basically a HUGE a** batch is made at the beginnign of the season and all the cars use fuel from this

98 RON is about 3 weeks away - if they stay on track for it. should see it appearing at Caltex Moonah, not sure where else yet.

It was high octain but stuffed up many a car (and mobil fixed the rich boys toys). cheers, itchione Make that 100/130 avgas and no, it wasn't sold to the public as straight AVGAS. If it did mke it to petrol pumps, it was maxed with the fuel. Some lucky members in the public got their hands on straight AVGAS but many of them then promptly get their fuel systems cleaned. I would imagine if any oil company sold AVGAS to the public they would be exposing themselves to procecution as it is a leaded fuel and illegal for road use. It's not as easy to get AVGAS nowadays .... used to be you just rocked up to your local airfield and fill up your jerry cans. Now you need to sign a Stat Dec saying the AVGAS you purchase will not be used on the road! Gotta say ... nothing beats the smell of burnt AVGAS though .... mobil did sell a batch of the 'bad avgas' to the car public. maybe they did some re-processing of the fuel to make it catalytic friendly but i don't know. this possibly reprocessed 'bad avgas' sold for road vehicle use and had the same clogging problem as the original 'bad avgas' batch. to avoid prosecution or image problems from the car buying public, mobil did repair a large number of posh cars after distributing this bad fuel. really, oil companies can and often exhibit dodgie behaviour so i wouldnt put much past them. until there are laws that clearly define what petrol IS, we can be sold almost anything and it could be called petrol. we also need accurate labling laws (and enforcement of these laws) for pertol composition and ron ratings at the pump. give me a lable that says 98RON, 5% ethanol, 95% petrol (as should be defined in legislation and i would be happier). much much happier if a 3rd party also frequently checks pump accuracy. calling a fuel 'ultimate', 'optimax' or whatever is just a marketing thing, the fuel could contain almost anything (good or bad). As for illegality of avgas in road vehicles, i can't see why it would be illegal on a pre catalytic (leaded) vehicle. Last time i bought avgas was 10 years ago and for use in a 250cc supercart, went like a scalded cat and yes, smelt great cheers, itchione |

Please correct me if I'm wrong here. However last year when I bought some AVGAS I had to sign a Statutory Declaration from the Police saying that I would not be using it for road use. The airfield would not sell me any without this Stat Dec. Cheers, Alan.

What's avgas worth when you can get hold of it ?
Brett, check out this PDF, it lists all the servos that have the juice (not that a drive out to the shire isn't nice ) http://www-static.shell.com/static/au-e ... xtreme.pdf

I whacked in $50 worth of optimax extreme yesterday and as expected there was no perceivable difference. I'm running 12.5:1 compression so if anyone was going to benefit it'd be in an engine such as mine. I think any slight gain that may have been there from the extra octane was masked by the fact that the car was now lugging around 40kg of extra weight.
I did notice 2 things, the exhaust smelled differently, it had a sweeter smell than usual - presumably the alcohol and it also had more of a burbley backfire, although that could have been from the ECU playing with the fuel and timing maps because the car was running hot (coolant temp at 99 degrees)

Jay,
See what Km's you get out of it. I got an extra 50km's out of mine on the first tank of Extreme I used. |
