Latest addition to my CAI is this little bellmouth fitting inside the airbox. Other mods include the following:
Oversize throttle body $220 (eBay)
Gasket material to make idle speed controller gasket $16 (Auto One)
BA 6-cyl. inlet duct $25 (wreckers)
BA V8 snorkel $40 (FTG Auto Salvage via eBay) – modified to make the mouth bigger
Cold air induction pipe from front bumper to front of snorkel $50 (Auto One)
PVC pipe connecting inlet duct to airbox $3 (hardware shop)
K&N panel filter $80 (eBay) - waste of money really; paper filters are fine
Modified my existing airbox with insulating material on "hot" side of box, inner snorkel replaced with bigger 3” bellmouth and intake hole cut into front of box and covered with mesh - free DIY

Total outlay $414 not including random sundries I already had etc; all work performed by myself.
Narrowest point in the intake is 68mm at the throttle body.

whats the need for the mesh on the intake? anything that can get through the gap under the bonnet is going to be small enough to get through the mesh anyway, and apart from a few bugs nothing will come up through that pipe from your bumper.... the odd leaf that does get through will only sit at the bottom of your air box.... id get rid of the mesh, will look heaps better, unless you have rat colonies in your garage :)

bonnet scoop to be connected later???

also, are they gay purple number plates?

You'd be surprised! I had this setup on a different car (front air scoop, pvc pipe up to hole in bottom of air box), and would often find small rocks and gravel in the bottom of the air box. I was relying entirely on the panel air filter to stop those rocks entering the engine. It definately collects more than you'd think.

Joe

The mesh definitely helps preserve the filter and keep crap out of the airbox, esp. bees, grasshoppers and little rocks. The difference is noticeable when you clean the filter before/after. I do a lot of country driving in my spare time so I do encounter swarms of bugs etc from time to time. Note the bugs all over my trans cooler - that was after I scraped the big ones off!

The bonnet scoop was added just to make it look different and all it does (if anything) is cool the engine bay a little more. It wasn't added for the sake of performance.

The number plates are not purple; they're blue on white. These plates are standard issue in Western Australia.

Cheers :)

Unfortunately I dont have any pics of the finished alloy setup but this is some pics of the mock up that was used to fabricate the finished one

The finished one has mounts that bolt to the base and will then be welded to the tappet cover along with another ring type piece that will secure the filter with the help of bolt and wing nuts

Daz, that a big cooler....you should be getting some low intake temps with that. I've never seen so much fabrication go into plumbing back a BOV!

Joe

Yeah Joe, should do the job.
Actually contemplated putting it on the other side of the cooler just to make it a bit easier to plumb back.......Have to fiddle with the tube as it's sitting a bit on the p1$$....

Cheers
