I'm looking into my options for setting up my cold air intake and I'm liking the sound of a 3" stainless setup running into a 70MM Throttle Body. The only question is whether or not it is illegal (Queensland Law) to run a pod filter in the air filter box. I know its certainly illegal without it as it can catch fire due to the heat, but the filter would certainly be protected from the excessive heats that cause the to catch fire; wouldn't they?

Cheers for the info.

i have heard of some cheap ones catching fire...

you can run a pod inside your airbox legally. the reason its illegal without it is its an exposed element. i dont know why they made the rule as alot of V8's run exposed filters without hassle... i think its more engine bay heat into motor = more emissions

I re-did mine, as i never did like the black factory flexi, which would suck in and restrict a bit...

No I asked my mechanic about this when I was getting a rwc on my car. It has to be boxed because otherwise they deem it to be 'unsecured'. In other words, they dont want s**t flying around your engine bay because it can end up dropping out on the freeway and hitting the car behind you or causing a traffic hazard.

factory fitted indicators fall off some cars while driving.. and if you watched bathurst over the weekend you would have seen holdens also like to loose doors...

so providing its secured tight i dont see what the issue is. according to the qld transport website its considered an exposed element...

I had a holden rental car while mine was getting converted to vapour injected LPG. s**t fell off that thing left right an centre. The indicator stalk caught on fire, the bonnet didnt open and the boot didnt stay shut. Therefore holdens shouldnt be roadworthy at all lol

maybe QLD has different laws to vic. or maybe the local mechanic is a drop out who was talking through his a**.

Point is, ive never seen any problems occur from having a pod. And if your ambient air temperature behind the left head light is so high that a filter could spontaneously combust then you have bigger problems then an un-boxed pod. In fact anywhere that filters are catching on fire you can guarantee a box would be melting.

Are closed heat shields more beneficial than an open heat shield? I notice some form a wall that separate the pod from the engine while others completely enclose the pod and are air tight on the sides and above the pod. Are closed heat shield systems colder?

Yes sealing it is better as you can get a direct feed from outside. Just putting up a wall relies on air seeping though all these gaps to be able to get to your filter. In the end cars arent designed like sieves so there isnt actually that many good areas. If there were you'd end up with water in your engine bay after driving through rain.

Also when these cars are dyno tuned it is done so with the bonnet open. Which means the tune is invalid as when driving the air wont be as available. But when you do it with a sealed pod its tuned with outside air and drives on outside air.

Okay sounds good. I'm going to work on making a sealed heat shield and run an air duct to the outside so the pod can suck in air more efficiently. Right now It's just sitting in the corner and my previous filter had a small air duct on the bottom. I may use that to feed the pod. Thanks for your input.

There's some good looking set-up's in here, looking through them got me thinking about what I could do with the FG but then after looking under the lid for a bit I'm starting to wonder how much more can be done to improve on the stock intake system.

I'm not too keen on the plastic to be honest but the whole intake path appears to be much more direct than it was with the older style BF intake. Is the FG XR6T intake much different than the older models?

This is the stock FG intake..

you cant improve on that mate, its already a good setup with a direct path to a throttle body that is now pointing in the right direction, big air box, and a decent sized snorkel that is bigger than the biggest on the BF models. Modding that will not gain you anything.... unless your after looks
