ecu is still used for engine managment, eg timing etc, and depending on model car also trans
EF-L tickford gas vehicles run different fuel maps and trans maps depending on which fuel is run LPG or ULP

i have a xr6 ECU will still be controlling ignition timing - but the timing maps wouldnt be any different to those used on petrol. Also stuff like thermo fans, smartlock etc are dependant on the ECU.

so tuning the car on gas would be done by tuning up the mixtures...?
also with the ingition timing.. would there be any difference from gas to petrol? is there a performance difference if timing is different on gas?if there is how would u go about changing it? haha sorry about 3248230 questions

Im not terribly familiar with LPG tuning but i understand its the convertor or the mixer that is adjusted to provide the appropriate flow of gas. If the ignition timing control is being handled by EEC - then no, i wouldnt expect there to be any difference between the ignition timing on gas and LPG. LPG is usually of a higher octane. Although im sure there are other factors at play - other things being equal, you should theoretically be able to run a fair bit more timing advance on LPG compared to regular unleaded. To go about changing it - ideally you would have an ECU that switched spark maps depending on wether petrol or LPG had been selected. Very difficult to do using exisitng hardware.... Altho... The new CAPA chip coming out for E series falcons apparently has 4 selecteable programs. So theoretically you could switch between 2 of these depending on what fuel you were running the car on. Would be pretty cool hey???

LPG has a higher octane rating but burns cooler and puts out less energy per litre, which is why it is gutless, and requires a higher volume of fuel is consumed.

interesting, i doubt that when the person i bought it off got the aftermarket gas, there wasnt anything changed in the ecu.
whens that capa thing coming out?

I dispute that lpg is gutless, most people cant tell the difference with most modern systems these days. I drive an AU Falcon 6 and bugger all difference between my wifes AU on ULP. My Sons EL Falcon beats my wifes and mine off the lights and keeps pulling hard and that runs on LPG with a tickford lpg ecu so is better tuned to run on LPG

then theres liquid injection which changes everything, more power than ULP and cheaper to run as well but install cost is twice the price of standard LPG set up

I cant tell the difference between ULP and LPG on my LTD. I'll be graphing it on the Dyno soon.

When someone gets a LPG conversion, is the ECU changed at all?
And would it be better to get a Tickford LPG ECU instead? (for an XR6)

My tests with an LPG ECU are at: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... hlight=lpg .
