i dont really see what this argument is about its a little silly, if you awnt to find out the power differences and economy you would have to put cars on dyno running different fuels, but i would suspect the quality of the fule is going to make a difference not its octane rating. also its a lil hard to compare a carby style gas set up to an injected fuel set up.
be good to see some of teh lpgi set up that are being done nwo |

this has nothing to do with the fuels, he set out to set the record straight.
quite often you hear people say LPG has a higher octane then petrol, blah blah blah. it *is* true. that was the point of the thread, LPG octane vs petrol octane. not LPG power vs petrol power.

I have extremely simple evidence that LPG burns slower than BP ultimate or Shell Optimax or Mobil 8000 I have advanced my timing approximately to a static 18deg BTDC and there is zero, zip, zilch, nada, nothing, no detonation or pinging at all on LPG. Listened to with headphones and a pickup on the block. When I put it on petrol, it audiably pings under heavy load without even using the headphones, above about 2500RPM. It also cuts out at about 4000RPM on the dyno on petrol. No such problem on LPG until I bring another two or so degrees of static timing. The problem doesn't exist under partial load on petrol. |

Straight from this site, the minimum typical octane rating of Shell LPG is 92. Straight from this site, the typical octane rating of Optimax is 98.4 Based on the 2 links you provided, these facts are within: http://www.shell.com/static/au-en/downl ... pg_pds.pdf LPG: Motor Octane Number (MON): 92 Minimum http://www.shell.com/static/au-en/downl ... ax_tds.pdf Optimax: "With a Research Octane Number of 98..." Pretty Simple. LPG has a MON of 92+, Optimax has a RON of 98.

Good call john. There's certainly a hell of a lot more to power than a fuel's octane rating.

What's the difference between MON and RON? You can't quote numbers from two seperate scales... We need to compare apples with apples, not bananas.

The performance of an engine is dependent upon many factors, one of which is the severity of operation. Accordingly the performance of a fuel is also dependent upon engine severity. To account for differences in the performance quality of a fuel two engine octane numbers are routinely used. Thc Research Octane Number (RON, or F1) simulates fuel performance under low severity engine operation. The Motor Octane Number (MON, or F2) simulates more severe operation that might be incurred at high speed or high load. In practice the octane of a gasoline is reported as the average of RON and MON or R+M/2.

See any similarities? Read it again. Comparing MON with RON is like comparing airplanes to cars. They both get you from A to B but have a fundamentally different function. FFS. |

All that I care about is that LPG is cheaper for me to run on with the amount of mileage I do ... I still have sufficient low down torque that I need for my work and also play as well.
To me ... LPG is much better for my needs than petrol ... I'd be broke if i was running petrol. Also Shells figures are low because they use more butane than propane in their mixture to prevent gas expansion on hot day (also reducing the octane rating) ... other oil companies use a higher propane mixture (increasing octane ratings).

Read the first post and you will see I'm disproving unclewoja's theory that LPG is a lower octane fuel.

I suspect most of us have disproved his theory based on what we have personally tested and what we have read on the oil company websites, you and I inclusive. moron? Oh I see, you're the site administrator so you are a clear and superior being to us workers down here. Personal insults must do you wonders. I'll try your style now: Coz your too busy calling others morons to re-read the whole thread from the beginning to end, I'll copy, paste and type the following slowly so you might make more sense of it: My first post in this thread: Bozz wrote: I have extremely simple evidence that LPG burns slower than BP ultimate or Shell Optimax or Mobil 8000 I have advanced my timing approximately to a static 18deg BTDC and there is zero, zip, zilch, nada, nothing, no detonation or pinging at all on LPG. Pretty Simple. LPG has a MON of 92+, Optimax has a RON of 98. Now, I'll type this very slowly, one finger typing instead of my usual touch typing: LPG has a MON of 92+ (lets call it an airplane, or an apple). Optimax has a RON of 98 (lets call it a car, or a banana). We are comparing two different things, my post of: Bozz wrote: But airplanes have 2 wings and cars have 4 tyres so cars must be better coz the number is higher!
was a sarcastic analogy of explaining that wings are not tyres, or apples are not bananas, or MON is not RON. I do not expect you to understand analogies, so please throw me another insult in your usual fine style. Warm regards! |
