im pretty sure you can replace it without removing the head but not certain as i did my head, timing chain and gear at the same time. someone else on here would be able to give you a definate answer on that

you dont need the head removed to swap the cam gear , its just a matter of keeping the timing in and tension etc

Sorry forgot to get back to you ranga...won't be dyno tuning it for the time being. It is running fine at the moment and the fuel consumption isn't too bad, so dyno tune isn't necessary.

I ride a motorcycle as a daily to work and back which saves me about $4000 a year just on fuel. Minus rego, insurance, service, I am still up $2000. So I am not too fussed on fuel economy of the EL as a weekender.

EDIT: Also raven, not sure on the diff question. I imagine it wouldn't put anymore load on it...well anything that is noticeable. I gained most of the fuel economy changing to a manual for city driving. On the highway it gained 250RPM (now sitting at 2000RPM over 1750RPM with the auto), however that allowed the RPM to sit close to its peak power, meaning the engine isn't labouring as much as it would sitting a little lower...probably why highway economy didn't change much from a transmission conversion.
