i am investigating an ignition control system for my xf,
i want to be able to retard the timing as nitrous comes on, and also have the flexibility to control advance through out the rev range,, im not interested in going injected so that rules out things like wolf3d etc... im looking at a couple of MSD products, namely the MSD 6a, coupled with some sort of timing control like the "three stage retard control pn8970" any thoughts?? other suggestions?? money is a little tight so cheaper solutions would be good -mitch

Mate... You might want to have a chat to Steve (a.k.a dcstraight, one of out illustrious mods).
He has a fully user programmable piggy back ECU called an SMT6. It can control the spark timing (as well as fuel, not that you need it) for you and has a couple of controllable outputs. One nice feature that you might be interested in is switchable independant ignition maps. You might want to better optimise your normal drivability timing on map A. But when you turn the nitrous on, the same switch could cause a map switch within the ECU to sometihng special setup for the nitrous. You could swap your dizzy for the EFI one cheaply from an XF, and let this SMT do the rest. Just an idea for you. |

The Pro Comp version, cheaper copy. MSD's patent on the 6A expired ages ago so anyone can copy it.
Other than that Jaycar should have a kit for you. |

By piggy back it mostly means it can run concurrently with your existing control unit (in your case you just replace your control unit).
Jaycar is a good thought. MegaJolt is an EDIS controller, so unless you are converting to coils, MegaSpark is what you are after if in search for a DYI controller. (sorry got them mixed up). Megaspark is also made to control the MSD-6AL module, so if you get one of them. Or I have the scehmatics for the MSD-6A if you wanna build that too (although they are very cheap these days). As stated there are also various versions of the MSD-6A, cheaper versions. Cheers
