Lol, the harmonic balancer hasnt slipped has it??

30 +/- 2 degrees BTDC is the right base timing for the 5L.

Assuming the EL 96 5.0 is set the same as the EF 94-95 then this is your confirmation from my Ford factory workshop manual.

Ignition timing will be held at base timing during and for
TWO MINUTES after completion of the engine running self
test. Should more time be required to set ignition timing the
self test will have to be restarted. Switch the ignition 'off' for
15 seconds before restarting engine.

From memory it is the same with the 6 and initial high revs is the 'self test'.

You could turn no 1 piston to TDC, by removing the sparkplug and checking to see when the piston rocks on top by using a suitable soft rubber "dipstick" down the plughole.

After that, see if you can borrow a degree wheel somewhere, and align it's zero with the timing pointer zero.

Then, check your damper's marks to see if they read the same as the degrees on the degree wheel. This is the best method I know of, also the most accurate.

It's quite unlikely that the elastomer ring on your damper let go and allowed slippage, even more unlikely that your crankpulley has sheared it's key, but of course, anything is possible.

Give us feedback as to your findings.
