How "spot on" is this mod?

If i bought the chip to change my auto Fairmont ECU into a manual xr6 ECU, would it run exactly the same as the real thing?

the code is what makes the ECU, provided that the code matches your hardware, ie you cant put an EL XR6 bin in an EB GLI, but you can in any other form of EL 6 cylinder, then your ECU effectively becomes the new catch code

Well great work there. So this would effectively drop the value of used XR ecu's

I guess the downside is, if you wanted a 'supported' J3 chip like Chiptorque or Eliminator in the future, theres no room left.

Or is this the same thing as well?

^ Chiptorque is the same thing (can't remember what the Eliminator is). Chiptorque get the code, change some values around to make it slightly more aggressive, and put it on a chip.

Putting an XR tune on, is really just an easy way of achieving a slightly more aggressive ecu (compared to tuning it). Get the XR tune, put it on a chip.

it starts out cheap, and can stay that way if you like. Ive spent all up about $600 on software and hardware, and I can now burn chips, and tune on the fly with my EECV EF 5ltr, not a bad investment really. If all you want to do is make chips, you could get away with it for under $200 easy.

I just want to kit myself out to start with an EL XR6 bin and edit the tables to suit my charged motor when I find out it's AFR's on the dyno....

this is THE BEST approach! all tuning should be based on a dyno run and followed up with one too if you can. at the very least you should have some kind of device to watch your AFRs (i have an innovate LC-1).

He he - just waiting for the programmer.

I want to play with the LPG chip - need XR Maps and Shifts, the LPG timing as well as XR Timing, and want to play with the BBM Speed.

Mmmm
