Just reading up on TI performance about cleaning J3 connections, and wondering why my connections are still gray ( No paste ) and not copper as shown in the instructions, i'm guessing this is just a coating, didn't want to clean it too too well as i've read about people over - cleaning j3 ports. Here's a quote:
"After you are done cleaning, there shouldn't be ANY copper showing. The contacts should still have a fully silver hue. Visible copper is an indication that you've removed the tinning on the contacts and you are more susceptible to corrosion on the contacts which will compromise the connection.
"
I've found this on what appears to be an American website, EEC V they're referring too as well, thought i'd run by you guys before stuffing anything up. Cheers.

Open the ECU, pull out the board and carfully scrape off the protective coating. I used Carby cleaner sprayed on a fine cloth to clean the rest off. No issues at all.

Ah so the protective coating is silver... i'll slowly scrape it off.

the protective coating is clear, then there is a layer of silver solder, then the copper.

The protective coating is like a rubbery substance. Someone might have a better name for it. The silver coating is the tinning on the contacts.

Mk, so i won't scrape the tinning off, under the magnifying glass i think i see what you mean, though this meth spirits and Q tips almost look like it's leaving residue behind, grr.

Can you please let me know which step is not clear?

Quote:
3. The photo on the left shows a bare, uncleaned J3 port. Open up the ECU case by removing the six bolts. First, remove the white paste with a rag and methylated spirits. Next, scrape off the clear protective coating on the J3 terminals using a flat bladed screwdriver. This will take a little patience, but is the best way to remove the coating. Note: You must do this on both sides of the J3 Port!

4. Once you have removed most of this lacquer, use some sandpaper (600 grade works well) to remove the remainder of the coating. When the terminals are a clean silver colour, without any clear coating, do not go any further. Give the port a good clean with a rag and some methylated sprits. Note: Failure to follow this step correctly will lead to issues with the connection!

Quote from my instructions, emphasis mine. Can't understand where you would misinterpret these?

Cheers,
Jason

Jason i never saw

"When the terminals are a clean silver colour, without any clear coating, do not go any further"

in the instructions that i had been following on the T.I Performance website, here's a link to what i was reading.

http://www.tiperformance.com.au/Documen ... 0EA-ED.pdf

That's the only area i could find those instructions at.

Not sure if something is bugged out on my end.

The document you linked is not J3 Chip Installation instructions. When your order was completed, you would have gotten an email that contained this link:

http://www.tiperformance.com.au/Documen ... 20Chip.pdf

Anyway, seems that you found the right document.

Yeah firefox seemed to have skewed things a little, documents weren't where they should be. All good now.

J3 chip and programmer arrived today ^^ Programmed the chip, put it into the ecu, installed all of that on the EA, went to go prime, she stopped after 2 seconds, great, kicked her over and she stalled, did it again and it stayed running, but it's running pretty bad, really really rough atm, the timing mark is at it's factory position, the timing mark seems to be jumping back and forth, tried to rev it and i got a backfire.

I suspect i haven't cleaned the port properly. However, it is running ^^ Very happy so far.

Turned out the port wasn't cleaned properly, i thought the other side had no insulation on it ( Felt like bare metal ) until i read over the instructions twice and decided to start scraping the other side, behold alot of insulator coming off, made sure i got it nice and clean with some methylated spirits as per instructed, threw it back into the car and she ran smooth. No more rich mixture / popping and misfiring. Cheers Jason, your kit saved me alot of time and money, and now if i throw a cam in it i can tune it ^^

Hi all

Does anyone know where I can find a download of the N4AFF strategy?

Or a strategy that will work with the 4DCx ECU's?
N4AGB, N4AG9, N4MG3, don't seem to work.

This is the strategy listed in the HEX code for the EF 4DCx ECU's.

Cheers.
J.
