I was going to try and replacce my Fuel Filter this arvo. So I have disconnected the Fuel Relay, etc and started it up until it stalled so no Fuel pressure etc. So then I hopped under the car to undo the Union Bolts so as to take it off so I can put the new Fuel Filter on. Then I think I am not sure which way to turn them or which ones to turn etc As I dont want to bloody round the bolts on the Fuel Lines or anything like that. Like do you put both spanners at one end and turn. Whats the GO???????

Yes two spanners at one end at a time. You use one spanner on the fuel filter nut (the nut that is actually part of the filter) and one fuel line nut. Hold the fuel filter still and turn the nut on the fuel line anticlockwise, hope that makes sense. Sometimes they can be really quite tight, just make sure you have good fitting spanners and you shouldn't round them. Also be prepared that even though you have no fuel pressure in the lines, fuel will still run out of the lines when you take them off because the filter is lower than the tank, so have the new filter there ready to put straight on and don't smoke

If you are worried about runding the nuts, get some special brake line spanners from Repco (or similar). They come in a range of sizes.

They go all the way around the nut except for a small cut out for the line - you can also make your own by cutting a slot in a hex ring spanner - but that is not nearly as strong.

Depending on how tight the fittings are on the fuel filter you may end up rounding them off even with a decent spanner that fits well.

I recommend Vice Grips to get them off or at least to get them loose.

If you have a steel fuel filter its going to be a b**ch to undo because they are so freakin tight to make them seal.

I recommend the filter to replace it with is a Ryco filter with part number Z373. They are aluminium and dont need a massive torque on the fittings to get it to seal, so it will be easy to get it off later.

Also be wary that even though you have depressurised the fuel line there may be some residual pressure left in the line so please wear safety goggles.

Cheers

Oh sorry folks I did get the old Fuel Filter off with, and yes with 2 Adjustable Spanners and I did get a tiny bit of petrol on myself. I then put the new one in no problems

You put vice grips near your car, there is no way i would use vice grips for anything on my car, thats just destruction waiting to happen!!!!

Its not hard to find a set of good fitting spanners and just use the right size.

Yeah I agree with you their I find Vice grips definately round the edges of things. I only used a 15mm and a 20mm Adjustable Spanners and they were perfect with only slight rounding when I started turning the nuts the Wrong way!

I had one of the pipe fitting spanners for the job and the bloody thing rounded off the nut because it was a steel fuel filter and the torque on it was ridiculous. I then used the vice grips to get the fitting off, nothing else would work.
Having said that your right vice grips are a last resort but if you have a steel fuel filter then you will pretty much be using them in the end.
When you use the Ryco Z373 filter all your troubles are gone and a normal spanner even a cheap s**t one will work.
Steel fuel filters are for clowns.

Please explain Timmeh? Well what others are their? I thought that Plastic would be to brittle on the Union nuts. Because the original Filter I took of my EL was a Steel one I think. The one I replaced it with was steel too.

the one made by ryco is aluminium and therefore seals with only a fraction of the torque required to seal a steal one. i to had to use vice grips after the spanner rounded the nuts on the fuel line, as they were completey seized.

The other is the Ryco one. Its aluminium seals a lot better with less torque.
Exactly what msman said.

I will never use a steel fuel filter again.

i think u got it easy, i replced the one on my parents ed, i a very sure it was the original flter because i couldnt get it off, using pipe spanners it started rounding off, the only way to get the bloody thing off was to pull the fuel line off from the rubber hose near the tank and pull half the fuel line out, put it in the vice and only just got the thing off, stupid prick off a thing!
