disadvanteges... ethanol draws moisture out of the air and into your fuel.
it corrodes metal (your fuel lines and the inside of you injectors are metal. it makes plastic go brittle and perishes rubber. there is less engergy in ethanol the Stoichiometric ratio of petrol is 14.7:1 and for E10 is 14:1 E20 13.5:1 pure ethanol is close to 8:1 so there is less energy in it and you need to use more of it!!!!!! advantages.... havn't found any yet |

just a point of interest... my current car (series 1 VN Commodore) actually gets better km per litre from e10 than standard. i get 450km out of a tank on standard fuel if im lucky and not booting it around... i get 500-550 on e10 even if i do boot it around a bit. but at the end of this week ill have my el fairmont ghia... so ill keep you posted about the km per tank with and without ethanol
Edit: forgot to mention... the car runs not only smoother but also feels like it has more power as well. |

tickford 6 have you actually tried any or are your asumptions simpily that, ethanol is perfectly safe to use in dosages less then 80% and it costs less, gives u more power and has a better economy so why wouldnt you use it?

okay cool,..
so lets say, if i got half a tank of normal unleaded petrol, can i mix/add half a tank of petrol with the 10% ethanol (E10)?? or should i or must i use e10 when tank is nearly empty. |

they are not my asumptions. they are facts you can find at www.deh.gov.au that and i my best friend works for a company that put half of thier fleet of close to 100 cars on E10 that half constanly has fuel realated problems. the other half (the same make and modles) dont have the problems. i have not seen one servo that sells it cheaper then regular fuel... ethanol is not safe for the reasons i gave, you can use it if you like but i'm not nor will i ever recomend it to anyone. why would you use a fuel that will by default make you car run leaner then it should? why would you use a fuel that has less potential energy and needs a richer mix to achive it? why would you use a fuel that is cheaper to make but cost the same at the bowser to buy? why would you use a fuel that damages your fuel system?? |

e10 is about 3 cents a litre cheaper here in SA, so does save you some money, I guess if it cost the same as normal unleaded then I would use that instead..... why change unless it saves you some money???
and as for the VN owner.... I use to get 550 on a full tank in my 1990 VN wagon but that was a 5 speed, and I was no saint driving it either.....

yeah wagons have a bigger fuel tank and manuals are better on fuel as well... but come on how many vn owners are ever saints of drivers? less than 48 hours till i get my new car!!!
Cant wait... from a bottom of the range vn to a el fairmont ghia... pretty nice upgrade i should think |

anything would be an upgrade just considering the dash alone on the VN for starters.... even my xcab is a major upgrade over the VN

well an update from me is in order i guess... got the el fairmont on thursday before xmas. so far ive done nearly 2000km in it already (stupid xmas family driving thing). the first two tanks i was using regular unleaded but this latest tank i decided to try e10 fuel to see if it had any effect... cant be too sure yet till i get down to near empty but i think its using more fuel... my thoughts on it are this. the old vn probably ran rich to start with anyway so the effect of the higher octane rating and the tendancy to make the car run lean had a very positive effect on it. the el... well i havent really noticed much if any change in power but it seems to be using more fuel... but also ive been doing a bit more town driving with this tank than usual... we shall see
Edit: im avereging between 10-11 lt per 100kms with standard fuel. its up around the 11.6lt per 100kms at the moment but that could also have something to do with me wanting to get drunk with the family thus making the gf drive |

Because the ethanol contains oxygen, you get more oxygen in the cylinder aswell. Instead of 21% oxygen from the atmosphere, you might get 30% oxygen. More oxygen, more fuel burnt. |

Cars can be made to run well with lower energy fuels, in the states unleaded is only 86 RON and they still manage to get big horsepower from it. Just like LPG the technology just needs to be developed.
