Just filled the Xr8 up with the new Vortex 98, just wondering if anyone else has used it and what they think?? I usually use Optimax but I sick of driving miles out of the way just to fill up the beast.

There are two types of Vortex now......the old 95 Ron, marketed as Vortex premium and the new Vortex 98. it's only just being introduced to garages around here.

Vortex 98 FAQ wrote: Can knocking harm my engine?
Occasional light knocking won't harm an engine. Heavy or prolonged knocking can result in loss of power, overheating of parts in the cylinder and engine damage. Hrrrm. Try telling that to my engine when it's at 7psi. Bit of an understatement me thinks.......

(Stock) Cars with knock sensors will probably have noticable gains with their slightly more aggresive timing logic. Though you should give it a few tanks before you make any conclusions.

yeah you have to fill it for a few tanks to notice anything, unless it's real empty.
i don't notice a gain in km/tank at all.

i tried 98 octane fuel once.
not going to get it again unless i build the new engine to need it.( but i don't think i will) there is no point in using it in an engine that is not tunned for it. the burn rate is slower the 95 octane fuel.(the same as the burn rate of 95 is slower than 91) and thus simply filling up with 98 has the efect of retarding the timming a small amount. and so if you do use it you need to advance your timming to get any gains at all. and any thing you do 'feel' by only filling with 98 is your mind telling you that car feels faster. as is not. all you have to do is think about how the fuel burns in your engine and why we have timming advance. |

i don't notice a gain in km/tank at all. I found with bp ultimate it took roughly 3 tanks before the ecconomy and performance increased. usually only get ~420km's to a tank of pulp, now I just did 480 on a tank of ultimate after putting 3 tanks through the car. 98 ron does make a difference but it takes time for the ecu to learn the timing for it unfortunately.

yeah it's in the ecu, if you want it to learn quicker, put a bottle of octane boost in, works a charm and dosen't take as long for computer to learn.
i notice power increase, but not fuel economy.

there is only so far that EEC4 can advance the timming. there are still preset maps it has to go from. and because 98 octane wasn't around when you car was built the people that did the tune for it didn't tune it to be able to advance that far |
